It’s a very strange art gallery / expensive hobby collection. There is really no theme or coherence in the place. They were considered by trip advisor the best museum in latin america 6 years ago. Very strange, in Mexico City, Bogotá or even São Paulo you will find better and proper ones.

If you’re european, especially from a big city, is just not worth it.

There was a dutch themed galeria that was consistent, however wrongly trying to re-write history, and surgically removing portugal from the narrative, eventhough they have several paintings from colonial brasil under Portugal, none of which identified.

Then a medieval collection, extensive, for sure not cheap, some spanish coat of arms, and english noble houses. Then a clock collection.. and the swords of an egypt king (!).

The “piece of resistance”, the chappel… built 10 years ago in gothic style from the outside, with spanish barroque on the inside.

The founder was at some moment, the 2nd richer brazilian. I guess he has expensive hobbies, and wanted to show it.

Note: the staff was lovely, helpful, doing their job.

A few nice pieces, but mostly a collection of an extremely wealthy man with a poor eye for art. I honestly left wondering if he was a sociopath. If you're from a city with decent art museums, this is not worth visiting.

I can't believe that people actually enjoyed visiting this place! Obviously owned by someone with more money than taste, it is like wandering around the gift shops of Europe's fine museums with copies of The David, Boteros etc.
The coffee shop was ok.
Save the money you will spend on a taxi to get there and back and do something more worthwhile with your time.

Some Brazilian friends of ours in Recife invited us to visit the Instituto Ricardo Brennand on the last Tuesday of the month. They said it was free then, Which turned out to be true, but we've been to one museum here that was two rooms and maybe 18 paintings. So we weren't expecting much and I didn't have time to research it. We rode for about a half hour, switching buses, and got off. We walked through a typical Brazilian poor neighborhood with the sidewalks all buckling and falling apart for about six blocks and was glad it wasn't dark. I really wasn't expecting the museum to be much. I mean, this was a crowded part of the city. . .how big could the building be that housed the museum, and what could it hold?

Suddenly the crowded buildings stopped and we all stood with our mouths gaping. Ahead of us, stretching for a kilometer, was a brick road lined with 300 trees. A little topless trolley picked us up and dropped us off at a castle on a 77 acre landscaped estate. I felt like I had been dropped into a different world. . .primarily the 1600s and 1700s when the Dutch were in Recife. This museum holds one of the largest collections of arms and armory in the world, not to mention beautiful statues, some original, some copies (Michelangelo's David greeted us) , 1/10th of the collection of Franz Post paintings, and life- sized images. The museum is a combination of the Tower of London, the Louvre, Versailles, and the Rodin museum.

Click on "Virtual Tour" on the bottom of the official site to get a preview of this amazing museum that was built by the Englishman Richard Brennand in 2000 to house his vast collections.

It´s a castell and a unique place in the Recife. There, you can see beauty landscapes, a huge statue of David, paintings from the colonial age of Pernambuco (most of them made by Eckout, a Dutchman painter of the 16th century) and from Brazil, a Wax Museum with european historic figures, ancient arms and many other things. At the entry you pass by a long alameda. It´s a nice place to take great photos!

An interesting idea. A beautiful place to visit and a nice collection of art. And for those who like these things a nice collection of swords and knifes among other thing. A medieval castle experience (sort of...)

A castle built to show a private collection of antiques peaces of arts, furniture and guns. Worth the TKT.
You must go by car. If you get a taxi, be sure to have it waiting for you to come back because the castle is far from public transportation.

An interesting collection of fine art from many periods. The setting for all of the art is in a medieval looking castle. The collection contains Rodin, Botero, as well as Dutch and Asian masters and overall has a surprisingly European feel. It was very surprising to see a medieval type castle in the midst of the tropical setting of Brazil, and even more so to see that it was filled with a huge collection of medieval weapons and relics.

Totally worth visiting! Beautiful place with lots of history and art in its properties. Bring a camera and save at least a whole afternoon so you can appreciate all the views and arts and take pictures.
