A large Jain community developed in Kolkata during the British Empire. As a consequence, many Jain temples were built for worshippers. Sadly, many of the Jain temples in Kolkata prohibit entry to non-Jains. Fortunately the most magnificent of the Jain temples, the Shwetambar Jain Temple complex welcomes all visitors. Like many Jain temples, the temples in this complex are decorated with wall to wall carvings and states. These temples are some of the few living Jain temples and here you can see just how colourful active temples can be.

There are four temples in the complex, surrounding a central garden and fountain. I thought the best of the temples was Shitalnath Bhagwan Temple, which has a beautifully decorated exterior of silvery glass mosaics. Coloured glass mosaics of floral and animal designs decorate the walls and columns. The complex also shows European influences in the Neoclassical design of the Jain Shwetambar Dadajis Temple to the north, while the garden and pond also show Baroque influence.

I highly recommend a visit to the temples and gardens when in Kolkata.

Just stunning. Peaceful. The colours. Footwear must be removed before entering. You can photograph outside but not inside.

One must visit this place for its unique architecture. Along with Jainism, the place is one of the gems in marble construction with mirrors.

There are actually 3 Jain temples here, all adjacent to each other. Best visited in the morning around 9.30am. Not much of a crowd and photography is allowed only in the temple compounds.

Highly-ornated temple with a small garden and fountains. Open to the public, either in the early morning or in the mid-afternoon. Resides across the street to another Jain temple.

Covered with creative artistic motifs inlayed in stone. Nice gardens and welcoming atmosphere. Quiet and not full of tourists.

The complex is a beautiful arrangement of these shrines and draws tourists from all over the world. The architecture of the temples consists of intricately carved marbles and glass work.

Peaceful and stunning. This is a must visit temple as you move around Kolkata. The gardens are as lovely as the temple itself.
