I will not talk about the history , as those can easily be traced from Wikipedia! This massive structure once of great importance stands on Esplaande row in the Dalhousie area. Around 10-15 mins walk from the Esplanade metro towards Dalhousie. (near the Calcutta High Court). With admission price at just 10 INR , the building has a lot to offer. There is a designated guide who will brief on each and every subject . The hall is divided into various dedicated sections on history, transport, music , films, sports etc. of Kolkata since its discovery By Job Charnock. The tour starts with a video briefing and then moves onto various sections within the hall. One major issues I found was that the entire audio/video briefing was in Bengali(local language). However, the guide would translate into either Hindi or English upon request. I noticed that the port/shipping segment has been completely neglected & with Kolkata having a rich history in ports & shipping it was a shame that nothing on those topics were in display. Overall it was a good education on the history and heritage of Kolkata. If you have interest in history , this place should satisfy you.

The Town Hall was constructed during the British era and was meant to be a meeting place for the city's elite. It it witness to many historical events that went into the making of modern Bengal. There are many books, manuscripts and mementos on display here. It has always been a paradise for people who are keen on the history of Bengal.

In Roman-Doric style, this building was built by the architect Col John Garstin in 1813 with a fund of INR 7 Lakh raised from lottery to provide the Europeans with a place for social gatherings. At first, the hall was placed under a committee, which allowed the public to use the hall under such terms and conditions as were fixed by the government. The public could visit the ground floor hall to see statues and large size portrait paintings but they were not allowed indiscriminate access to the upper storey. In the year of 1897 the Town Hall had been partly renovated . After the political independence in 1947, indiscriminate interference with the structure inevitably took its toll. That, at last, has been prevented in 1998 by timely intervention. The town hall was featured on the 6th leg of The Amazing Race 18, when the teams had to compete in a tea-drinking roadblock. If you are fond of seeing old big status , potrait and if you want to know about kolkata one should visit this place .

This is a hidden gem at the heart of the City of Kolkata. I doubt how many people know about this attraction apart from those who have to attend political meetings. This is much more to that. You have so many galarries depicting different stages of of Kolkata. It was really great to hear Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore's own voice in one of them. To me a must visit if you want to know more about the city of joy - Kolkata.

From the school we took our students from class IV to class XII. The personnel went out of their way to make our students comfortable. The explanations in English were precise and had clarity. The additional advantage is that there is space at the rear for the buses to be parked.a huge treasure house ! Well maintained as well! Great work !

The imposing colonnaded cube of the former Town Hall Building dates from 1814...the funds for constructing this building was raised from a lottery to provide the Europeans with a place for social gatherings...
It now hosts Kolkata Panorama, an introduction to the city’s heritage through a lively collection of working models, videos and interactive exhibits. It’s interesting if you have an hour to spare, but as you must be accompanied by a guide it can be hard to ‘escape’ quickly...this is also a touristy spot of Kolkata...
There is a huge library and a musuem inside the hall...
Ticket price:
Rs. 10 on weekdays...
Rs. 15 on weekends...
