Regarded as one of the holiest of the 51 Shakti Peeths on Earth, the Kalighat Kali Temple is a must-visit place in Kolkata due to its history. It is a sacred ghat on the Hooghly River in Kolkata.
According to the legends, the right toe of the Goddess Sati fell here when Lord Vishnu cut the corpse of Goddess Sati into 51 pieces with his Sudarshan Chakra. Lord Vishnu took this step to save the Universe from the anger of Lord Shiva.
In the northeast of this sanctum, there is a Shiva Temple. There is one more shrine dedicated to Radha Krishna. The main attraction of this temple lies in the image of Goddess Kali who bears a long-protruded tongue made out of gold.
what I did not like was- their panda (priests) culture. It's simple torture. there is no regulation and now I am supporting the " special puja process in various temples across India", at least the price is fixed, when the puja is done, that is fixed unlike here.
here in Sanctum, these morons' priests won't even let you see Maa kali, they will simply ask you to give 100, 200, 500 and then they will "arrange darshan for you". they even obstructed the view of Maa Kali. it was a frustrating experience... and don't let me start on Queue and how people break it and how pandas (priests) arrange darshan for their clients through the exit door...
it's all chaos there. and that was not a good experience... my mother-in-law is not in favor of going to this temple because of this reason- I guess locals don't prefer and they go to Dakishneshwar just due to Priest's behavior...
I guess like Vishwanath temple, authority/ government is making a corridor - that's good

We went to Kolkata only to have darshan of Maha Kali in this temple at Alipore. Literally manhandled by the so-called Poojaris who demand cash for each activity. It was really a horrible experience. Temple surrounding was also in pathetic conditions. Don't know why Devi tolerating such evil people. There is no respect for you and family with you. A historic temple is trated so badly...It is shameful. Rather, visit Dakshineswar temple.

Very Bad experience because of some fraud people (Duplicate Pujari). I am very lucky to see Maa Kali, great place, I don't have complaint about Mandir or Maa but to be honest some priest (duplicate pujari) I think dalal spoiling this temple requtation day by day, they are making emotionally trapped with darsanarthi and taking huge money. You need to carry minimum 12-15 thousands INR in your pocket to see Maa Kali only. Every pujari during Mantra, they will and later on will say give 2500 for Maa, another place 2100, 5100, VIP gate entry 200 etc. They'll be tell give to maa, mix your son/daughter/family like emotionally blackmail, it will be very difficult for darsanarthi like us to say No because our heart is clean and We don't want urguement on auspicious day specially on mandir place. Sometime I feel online puja is much better than this trap. I hope mandir management need to make a rules to pay in one counter and give coupon including Prasad, pujari payment, dakshina other wise so many people in the middle will spoil this Kalighat reputation.
I was very sad to see very pathetic experience. Mata ji ka samne fraud. I hope Maa Kali sab cheating fraud people ko saja jarur dega

A very wonderful temple, a very powerful Shaktipeeth. Went here on 9th July 2023, after 10 long yrs.
The temple outer premises are yet not well maintained , but inside the temple was very beautiful because i got the chance to enter the Garbha griha of Devi Dakshina Kali, gave the pushpanjali + puja inside the Garbhagriha by a priest.☺☺
Got the chance to break the coconut near the lotus feet of Maa Kali , still on the bedi on which Maata Kali was standing+ got a chance to even touch her!!😍😍
I was very joyous that i gave ₹51 to 1 priest and another ₹51 to another priest who put Kumkum tilak from Mata's hand.
The priests didn't ask for that money but i gave after seeing such a nice behavior!!!!because i was worried previously when i read ratings here!!
One advise to all will be that don't fall in traps of Pandas who roam outside temple premises and trying to give u VIP darshan, its all fake!!😂🤣🤣
First buy puja accessories and then Go through the public line from gate no 2 only, no need to pay anything extra to any pandas. Line from Gate no 2 goes directly inside garbhagriha , Vip lines don't enter garbhagriha, and vip people have to do darshan from outside gate only
I gave that money to priests inside the Garbhagriha only!!, that too because i felt such peace and happiness inside after getting Mata Kali darshan.
Such a darshan wasn't expected, but still i loved the Garbhagriha and Mata Kali inside the temple.
Jai Maa🙏🙏

Today I went there with my family and this is the worst Temple I have ever visited. The Temple looks dead. You won't feel that spiritual feeling there even after entering the Temple. The surrounding is so dirty. No humanity left In people inside the Temple. The Temple is a business (money earning place) for them. You will find more beggers (including pandits) inside Temple then the place to pray. You will only find hands forward all over the place asking for money rather then giving blessing. How bad can it get now then Pandit in the main mandir asking for money without even getting Darsan of the God and when refused to give money telling his people to throw them out of the mandir. Like seriously. Are you there for the money. The donation should come for the heart. Pundits are the worst. The complaints will never end here.

It is one of the must visit temple for hindus visiting kolkata. It is a beautiful temple which has been renovated recently. It is well connected by road and rail. Large number of pilgrims visit daily and expect rush and be a bit careful of the pandits and keep your valuable safe from pickpocketer

Filthy dirty surroundings with cheating pandas grabbing at you for money. Highly corrupt priests and pandas in a neighbourhood which is ramshackle dirty and unhygienic.
Poor Ma Kali has to reside in the middle of these corrupt pandas who have no bhakti and only after youur money..I am surprised the Trinamool party has allowed this to happen and go on
The government should take.over and run it like Tirupati

How much time it takes to get darshan on a day of chaitra navaratri? As I have only 2 hours of time

There is a little long queue on 8th March, but the pandits forcibly drove us to go in separate lane by taking some money. There is no clear Darshana at all if you fall in with the word of those obstacle and cheating pandits. You better go in queue to see Kali matha idol.

You can visit temple for darshan any time, late evening will be better due to lesser crowd comparatively.

I did not see any ramp on the way to the idol. My advice is to avoid this temple and visit Dhakshineswar temple which is much more better than this and no touts and goondas here.

What's the best time to visit the temple? How much total time it will take to visit the temple? I have only first half to visit it and have to rush for my flight from DumDum at 4:00 PM. Please suggest.

Hi Bestsan 😊 best time to visit the temple is early morning 6-7am . It opens up at 5 am for Aarti. Rush days are Tuesdays, Fridays Saturdays and Bengali festivals. But early morning visit is the best. Approx 30 mins if early morning otherwise it is 1 hour.

I am going to Hotel Sonar Bangla @ Kolaghat in this weekend. Can someone help me by saying what sort of foods are available in this hotel during lunch & dinner time & what's the price range. The hotel is saying they would be providing complementary breakfast, now I want to know what sort of foods they provide during breakfast?

Don't think this is related to Kalighat at all. This probably is a new hotel at Deulti near Kolaghat. This place is around 70 kms. from Kolkata, About a 90 minutes drive. The main highway portion is very good. But don't have any idea at all about what they serve. Have probably seen the location. Bang on the very wide Rupnarayan river. Wonderful view.

Dear Sundari N,
I understand fully your concern rgarding harasment by panda,s as done in most religious places.
I woulld suggest you to go to any of the shops inside the Kalighat temple premises where prasad is sold, all the shops have their pandas, they will take you for darshan and bring back safely to their shop. You may pay them Rs 50-100 as per your convineience, I also do the same , Since i go regularly i prefer a particular shop.If you want i can give you the number, but remember one thing go to big shop inside the premises not on shops outside the premises, you will also encounter new pandas on the streets before the temple awoid them.
