A street named in reference to the many buildings belonging to the University of Kolkata. The street is also colloquially known as Colony of Books for all the bookstores on it. Books are not only stored in the shops, but piled high on the streets too. It’s an interesting sight. I can’t remember the last time I bought a physical book though.

Amazing Kolkata .. more than 200 years old
The College Street of Kolkata Spread across a stretch of 1.5 kilometres, the College street boasts of being the world’s largest repository of second hand books and the largest book market in India, available at dirt cheap prices. One can acquire good books at very cheap rates by hard bargaining too.

Even if you don't want to buy a book, go for the vibe and energy. So busy. Browse and enjoy it. Mind the traffic. Some books are in English too. Apparently you can buy or rent new and used books. So many stalls. The area is huge. Take a break at the famous Indian Coffee House. The area is home to the University and College students!

this is the book trade zone of kolkata with head offices of publishing houses, book distributors, retail sellers and used book dealers. be on your guard, you may be ripped off over a book you are not sure about. for price estimates. the pavement sellers are notorious for bad deals. it is better not to try used books if you are not a seasoned negotiator. know the name of key distributor shops that will offer you substantial discounts. otherwise offline purchase are oten costlier. like the city, its a messy chaotic place with noise, shanty type stalls and dilapidated buildings. its the place for bengali book lovers for hefty deals. go for complete works volumes/rochonabolis rather than individual novel books. coffee house is a hyped landmark of bengali intellectuals, in films, songs, where revolution takes place every day. with pricey food, cigarette smoke filled choking hall. walls are dirtied by innumerable posters, leaflets and graffities. delhi book trade zone, in daryaganj, is much bigger than college street, still, bengalis believe, that the place is asias biggest. there is other place too, for books. park street and gariahat. and creek row, ajc bose road has good medical book sellers. overall, a great haven for book lovers but may be nasty experience for naive buyers as predators loom large.

Its an awesome place where one can find books related anything they want, whether medical, law or science. There are varieties of novels and magazines. You can purchase first hand as well second hand books. People from all over Bangladesh and west Bengal come here to purchase. If you are visiting college street, dont forget to sip coffee at Indian Coffee House and visit Jorasanko Thakurbari. The street opens in the morning at 10 and starts closing by 7 pm.

The places has changed & become much more crowded from when I last visited it many years back. If you have the energy to rummage your way through narrow footpaths, please visit & pick up books at very cheap rate. You can visit some old stores such as Dasgupta & co., for legacy sake. If you're interested in reading english translations of Bengali literature you can find that too, just ask for it.There are stalls on footpaths as well as proper bookstores.

If there is a book available it is available here. Only on rare occasions I found some books were not available. But to be noted that if one or two book sellers are not able to find your book, then it will mostly not be available in the market. No point to go and search in every shop.
Recently after Covid19 struck, life has become a bit difficult for the Sellers. availability of books also affected.
If a certain book is not available, it can be searched at the old books' market just across the street, but need to check out the condition of the book before buying.

It's not a bunch of book stalls, not an area surrounding by collages, but a feelings. You must feel an another type of Goosebumps, when you walk. You feel the essence of Kolkata, The 200 years old "Presidency University", "The Coffee House" and lots of love.
