Being the first scientific and industrial museum in India since 1959 , Birla Industrial and Technological Museum, is located on the Gurusaday Road., is the prime attractions of Kolkata Initially as Birla Park and then converted into a museum. The palatial structure of museum became famous amongst tourist due to its galleries and 3D shows organized in the premises.
Birla Park was transformed into BITM under the influence of Dr B.C. Roy, who felt that a developing nation like India needed museums in its vicinity. Therefore, Mr. Birla handed over the property to Govt to set up to set up the museum which took nearly three years to complete.
BITM is also the pioneer of the Mobile Science Exhibitions with the first exhibition on wheels. With its galleries, diverse activities and the growing chains of the satellite centers, this museum is now the place where science manifests itself through means of interactive and animated models.
Very educative for you children .With simple models, the basic principles of science & technology have been explained. An amazing place and a must-visit for all the science lovers !

Please visit this place if you have school-going children. All the info are available in their website, including timings, fees, programs, etc. If you reside in Kolkata, try to enrol your kid to one of their many summer programs.

The first of the science & technology museums to dot the Indian landscape. It's vision to popularise science among the common man and non science public is unique. Lovely dioramas & working models to get you involved while you learn! Some more maintenance could do well, but it is still a pride of place for science students of Kolkata & West Bengal schools to be chosen to demonstrate their tech & scientific ingenuity through models & demos at the Museum's once a year Science Fair! The first Planning Officer to start with the Museum was my father, who went on many years later to become its Director as well as the first Director of the newly constituted National Council of Science Museums of India.

The meusem has good displays. The good part is the planetarium where you along with your children can enjoy the sky with planets along with their brief information.

BITM is one of the unique science museums in India. Different kinds of exhibits, a very well stocked library, an under ground coal mine, completely worth a visit especially for the kids in school interested in Science. I would recommend BITM over Science City and Indian Museum.

I took my children for a visit to this museum and got hooked to the DIY stuff there. I went back twice with my children for another complete round of feel good factor. A must for all parents of Kolkata.

I have visited this place when I was a kid, then when my sister was a kid,and now with my sister's son who has turned 7 years now!!
It was made for growing up kids who want to know and learn and still have immense fun.But these days the possible lack of funds and upkeep can be observed everywhere.
Most of the scientific thingies inside either do not operate or have become redundant, and maintenance of these are shabby.
A kid with a scientific bend of mind will though still find this place irresistible.

It is the best science museum I have ever visited. It is a great place especially for children. You get to many and wonderful things about science which even you would not be knowing about. There are many shows held there from 11 am. to 5 pm. There is also a small playground inside the building for children. The building is fully air conditioned. Be advised to take water along as there is only small gaps between shows and canteen is far. You have to go up and down a lot of stairs.
