You have done nothing in Darjeeling, if you have not taken the short toy train ride to Ghoom railway station which is "world's highest heritage railway station. On a rainy foggy day, the experience will give you another "feel".

The museum can be visited while you're taking a ride in the toy train as it mandatorily stops at Ghoom for 20 minutes. And read through the history as why British Empire laid the tracks in Darjeeling which is today known as Toy Train.

enjoyable ride, slightly expensive, unpunctual and carriages not kept clean. Take to normal train journey to Ghoom station and back for a similar experience, though this will have a diesel locomotive

The train ride was no fun . Hardly got to see any good scenery. The train passes through the streets of Darjeeling with shacks and small shops visible on either side. Batasia loop was full of vendors selling stuff .
A heritage should make one feel proud of it being there. The entry and walkway to ghum museum should be maintained and kept clean. The whole area is dirty with bottles and gutka packets strewn all over. Lot of work and cleanliness should be there to maintain a heritage which we should feel proud of .

It's amazing to see such an old engine (1892) still runs. The ride is a return journey: Darjeeling-Ghum-Darjeeling, with 15 minutes stop at Batasia Loop and then 25 minutes at Ghum. The ticket cost includes visit to the museum at Ghum station. Choose trains with Vistadome coaches for better experience. The ride itself is through busy streets, constantly honking. So we decided to walk back to Darjeeling from Ghum.

The rail museum at Ghoom, Darjeeling district is situated on the upper floor of the station building and can be accessed by the overbridge.
This is a small museum which presents the history of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It also attempts to make people aware of heritage conservation. The exhibits are a must-see for railway fans.

the history of the DHR is fascinating. How the engineers built it, roughly 130 -140 years back is worth learning about and also experiencing it. Absolute must when one visits Darjeeling.

Visited this museum during my visit on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR/Toy Train) from Darjeeling to Ghum (Ghoom) and while it is a small museum, the presentation of the information regarding the history of the Toy Train was well organised and detailed. And just outside the museum was a train or two in display so that was also a nice touch and it was a good place to look around and wait before the Toy train departed back to Darjeeling.

Take the steam engine instead of Diesel. The cost may be expensive but was worth it as it is a unique once in a life experience.

Yes, I want to know about model of steam/ desile engine is for sale . If its for sale why it is so costly. I saw it on Ghoom station museum railway and shimla railway station also . But there is no provision to buy using Credit or Debit card. Kindly make it easy through any payment . thanks.

Hi - I don't think I can help you, the system may not be very efficient but that's the way it is. Having said that - it is still a lovely trip, so don't miss it.
Is ticket available from counter on 1st week of May?

Hi there Aditya, I saw no reason for the ticket desk to be closed those dates, but best to turn up early as there was a very long queue.
