We went to the Museum rather than the Institute itself. (The Institute has some climbing activities, for a small price, and a 'Tenzing Rock' etc). The Museum is educative, with many artefacts and photographs from the pioneering expeditions in the Himalayan mountains - the world's widest such expanse. There is a unique scale model of the Himalayan range, which gives a 3D perspective of the relative locations of Everest, Kanchenjunga and Darjeeling. On display are a lot of equipment - mostly old. Each climber had a personal booklet as a checklist of all that they were to carry - showed meticulous planning. And each expedition had a huge number of unsung sherpas to carry the equipment.

The main attraction is the museum which houses a collection of artefacts from Himalayan mountaineering expeditions among other things. The personal items of Tenzing Norgay and the huge model of the Himalayan mountain range are standouts. Well worth the visit. They also have some small scale adventure activities for kids and adults.

Just at the end of the zoo, one can find the HMI Darjeeling and there is no entry fee for this. You will find a statue of Tenzing Norge and a Museum. This place is mainly for aspiring Students interested in Mountaineering and we found a group of young boys and girls just completed a training and waiting for their certificate.
Tourists can try four types of adventure games for total Rs 100/- which we did and it was great. There is a eating place inside to have food which is quite good. We had Darjeeling tea with French fries which was fantastic considering the chill outside.
Altogether, you will love this.

This is an Institution as well as inspiration for those who are dreaming to climb mountains. After achieving the impossible Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary decided to inspire people by establishing the first institute of HMI at Darjeeling in 1954. A part of this institition is a museum consists of preserved teeth and skull bones of those who became victims of uncertainity and extremely resilient journey to the upwards. It is based on the equipments, Vest, hat, oxygen cyllinders of Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary which were used for climbing the mount Everest. There is also a perfect model of all the himalayan mountain picks with its name and hight. Overall it is a very enthusiastic and interesting tourist place.

It was a perfect half day activity to visit the mountaineering Institute and the zoo. There were plenty of things to see and do. It was also near some lookout points so we were able to combine a walk to the zoo with some views of the Himalayas. Well worth it.

I was not aware that Tenzing Norgay was a resident of Darjeeling before my visit here; always believing that he was a native of Nepal. This Institute is an active training establishment for mountaineering and a museum of Himalayan expeditions with displays of equipment through the ages. A must for climbers of all persuasions.

I visited the Mountaineering institute whilst here in Darjeeling and found it excellent the exhibits and information are very good and I also watched a short film in the cinema as well which was well presented. There is also a small climbing wall and rope walkway at a small extra charge.
Definitely worth the visit.

Appreciate how this celebrates the multi-cultural history of Everest, with a focus on Tenzing Norgay. Gives you a sense of scale and the evolution of what is in the end an incredible team and individual human achievement. At the top of the Zoo path, so make sure to keep going when visiting the Zoo. Did not try the Zip Line or film.

HMI is the nick name of this place, once you enter its wow place. You have movie hall showing documentary of climbers. A well kept Museum of great collection, activity zone, and refreshment area. A must visit place with kids so that they can enjoy the activities. Compliments to team HMI for excellent management.

The entry fee for zoo garden, bengal natural history museum and himalayan mountaineering institute are all included. That is rs. 60. For other types of adventures you have to pay extra money.

how much entry ticket cost? and maximum time taken for inside visit
Written 12 April 2017
The entry fee is Rs. 50 for both HMI and the Zoo packed together. Camera fee is Rs. 10. The time depends on you. For ourselves, it took more than 3 hours to visit the two. Also there is a Natural History Museum in the zoo. Don't miss it.
