Despite reviews suggesting you only had to hire a guide to accompany you around in a car (we had a driver for the day) it turned out we had to hire the reserve’s own vehicle and driver. So, another 1200INR spent!

The two museums at the Sukna entrance are interesting enough but have lots of things in jars you can’t really see properly. But it would be unfair to suggest they are devoid of interest.

The place is very nice, as you might expect, but that was the only good point. We were unlucky, perhaps, not to see ANY animals other than villagers cattle and 1 solitary monkey but things were not helped by the guide being more interested in talking to driver and other park staff than spotting wildlife. We did see a lot of eagles but the guide had no idea what sort they were, but he was happy to show us photos of all the things we weren’t seeing and a recently dead elephant. We were rushed around at their pace in around an hour, a much shorter visit than expected and not long enough just to sit and wait for animals to appear or not.

The strong feeling we got was they were really not bothered about showing us around properly and we suspected not many people actually go. Or perhaps we upset an otherwise sleepy Sunday morning? This reserve has the potential to be very good but it currently isn’t which is a real shame.

You can book a car (jeep) to enjoy the safari in this sanctuary. While enjoying the safari please don't make too much noise because it can disturb the wild animal.

We drove to the entry point of Mahananda Wildlife sanctuary from Latpanchor village and the staff at the gate did not allow us to enter the sanctuary because of 4 wild elephants have gone berserk a few days ago and killed one person. They refused to issue entry permit for us and hence we have to return to our vehicle. We took a small stroll at the outer kachha road surrounding the forest area and looked for some birds. Mr. Bidhan Chettri is a very enthusiastic bird watcher and since we stayed in his Homestay (Kharkha Homestay) at Latpanchor, he was our natural guide. We spent some time around the place and visited nearby villages and witnessed sunset before driving back to the Homestay at Latpanchor village.

Great for nature lovers. Enjoy peaceful walks. Watch the birds. And beware of elephants. Best to combine the visit along with a tour of the Bengal Safari.

This place is on way from Bagdogra to Sikkim and is a real dense forest, which has some rare species of birds and good number of elephants. One can stay here for hours and breathe fresh air.
