One of the best places I have ever been. I would strongly recommend to visit Mahakal temple whenever you visit Darjeeling Mall. Its a bit steep but I can definitely promise you that it would be worth visiting the temple.

We visited in December 2019. The menace of monkeys have lessened. The road leading from the mall is quite steep and a long walk. There are uncountable number of prayer flags around the temple and one can get a nice view of the lower ground through the thick canopy of these flags and trees. There's also a place near the temple door to keep shoes and slippers.

The temple is a mix of Hindu and Buddhist worship. The Hindu temple is surrounded by prayer flags. It's a peaceful place with a calm atmosphere. There are monkeys around., be mindful. Worth the walk up the hill.

Mahakal temple is right beside the mall road. timings are 8:00a.m. to 5:30 everyday. We had to climb a little and in the middle of the way we had to take off our shoes and then visited there. ground was wet and so cold. Most important thing was to feel the peace among the whole area where only the holi bells were chanting with the hill winds, "Shiva".

Mahakal Temple is one of the most respected places in Darjeeling as many locals come here to worship Lord Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwar. It is one of the most respected places in Darjeeling as many locals come here to worship Lord Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwar. This place has a unique element, as one will notice a Hindu priest chanting while a Buddhist monk simultaneously reads Buddhist Holy Scriptures. The holy place is quite famous with both Buddhist and Hindu devotees. The tranquil atmosphere here provides a very spiritual experience.

The Mahakal temple is 10 mins from the Mall Darjeeling and we had to climb a pretty good steep road and stairs. The atmosphere was very devotional, there are Ganesh ji and Hanuman ji temple beside the Mahakal temple. The puja offered to lord shiva was in Buddhist style.

If you want to lit up diyas you need to pay Rs 10 for each.

Overall a nice place with a great vally view around.

Suggestion: If you are travelling with ladies and elders, then recommended to take a cab till the starting of the stairs. Else its very difficult..

The temple is reachable from 2 ways. take the Mall road from the right side of Chowrasta Mall, at about 50-60 steps you will find stairs that lead towards the Observatory Hill and the Mahakal Temple. There is a large signboard indicating the pathway. you will see lots of monkeys there so do not openly hold food and other small stuffs loose.
the temple looks full of colors as hundreds of Buddhist prayer flags fluttering all over and hanging from the trees. it is believed by the budhist that the prayers reach the heavens through the flags.
there is a cave called Mahakal Cave, within the same premises. As you climbing down you will see an yellow arch on the left. Stairs are there to climb down further to reach the cave. To enter the cave, you will need to crawl. Durga, Saat Kanya Bhagavati Devi and others along with a Shiva Linga are there in the cave.
One can take uphill walk beside the St Andrew's Church to reach Mahakal Temple as well. Special those who are staying in Darjeeling Tourist lodge or Gymkhana Resort.

I visited this temple when I came down to the Chowrasta for buying a few things. The hanging clothes of different color is what which got my attention. As I am muslim, keeping respect to Hinduism I did not enter the temple but really liked the vibe around the place. Recommended.

The Peace Pagoda engulfs you in its peace along with the surrounding dense trees. Calm, serene and re-freshing, that's what the Peace Pagoda leaves you with!
