Ghoom is a small hilly locality near Darjeelin. Ghoom railway station of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is the highest railway station in India. It is situated at an altitude of 2,258 metres (7,407 ft).[1] The place is the home of the Ghoom Monastery and the Batasia Loop, a bend of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. A visit to Darjeeling is absolutely incomplete with visit to Ghoom. A quaint and wonderful place.

Nice place. First time in my life I went somewhere like this much peaceful. Loved the monks. They were so much full of peace and spirituality. What else can I say? A must visit place.

One request, just don't be a bustard taking picture inside where they are trying to have knowledge. I saw too many disgusting Bengal People doing that. Even when there was written, no photography.!

Ghoom Monastery is situated very near to Batasia loop. The key attractions inside the monastery is the 15-foot model of the Lord Buddha.

There is a charge for taking photograph inside.

Ghoom is a standard part of every Darjeeling itinerary. Monasteries are not common place in the plains and plateau of India, but are all over the North East and in the Himalayas.

The colours and contours of a monastery are pretty much the same all over. A white pagoda with golden hues. A central prayer hall with prayer books, frankincense and a dominant statue of Buddha.

The day we went was a very cloudy and misty day. So it wasn’t very enjoyable especially when you remove your socks. There is a small canteen outside the monastery that was serving pooris with very watery chana.

Old Ghoom Monastery is opened all days of the week. no fees. It is the popular name of Yiga Choeling. The monastery belongs to the Gelukpa or the Yellow Hat sect and is known for its 15 feet-high statue of the Maitreya Buddha. Ghoom Gompa is 8 km from darjeling .... was founded by a Mongolian astrologer & monk. You will also find find bells, ornate thanka scrolls as well as drums inside the Gompa.

I absolutely loved the colourful doors and windows of the monastery. The adult monks were busy with their daily lives the little ones were gleefully playing. This place is close to the Batasia Loop and from the main city of Darjeeling, hence it can be easily reached.

At first, the Tibetan monastery appeared quite ordinary, a bit run down.

Inside the Monastery, a large golden statue ot Maitreya quietly awaits. The facial expression changes by angle, and you would be amazed to compare the photos you have taken yourself with the ones taken by others. That is very ordinary, for any Buddha statue, but this Maitreya is exceptionally POWERFUL.

Before leaving the Monastery, don't forget to donate 200 Rupees & receive a CD, a rare recording of sacred heavenly chants by the seven monks from the Monastery, which would turn your environment into the Maitreya world...
