Tiger Hill Observatory is one of the best viewpoints of Mt. Kanchenjunga (in Tibetan language it means Five Treasures of Snow) and it's also the highest point in Darjeeling. Here you'd be able to see the the highest peak in India and the 3rd highest summit in the world glowing as the mighty sun shines on its peak. You can also get an awesome view of the Eastern Himalayan Range. You have to reach around 4am to find a perfect spot before it gets too crowded.
I woke up at 3am. The temperature was already at 12° C. I managed to take a quick bath and I put on a knee length dress hoping it will protect me from the chilly weather. Google said during summer months (May to July), temperature ranges from 19° to 23° C so I didn't bring any jacket or sweater. I thought it'll feel like Manali which also has the same elevation of 1500 meters.
When we reached, the temperature dropped to 9° C. Luckily, there were several stalls selling hats, gloves and souvenir items. I got myself a woolen shawl and umbrella since it's started raining. To keep myself warm, I bought coffee served in a bhar/ kulhad (clay cups) which I hope can be adopted by the rest of the world. It's better than using paper or plastic cups. I also hope that there's a bin where we can throw these cups as people tend to just throw them everywhere.
The government of Darjeeling should also do some renovations on the observatory deck, maybe put a sky deck since it's gaining popularity for tourists in Sikkim. Have a better seating area especially for old people and those who couldn't stand longer. Shade where people can stay when it starts raining, toilets, food stalls and a specific area where vendors can sell their products.
I stayed there until 6:30am hoping that the sky would clear up and the fog will dissipate however there's still no sight of Mt. Kanchenjunga or the Himalayas.
Even if I didn't see Mt. Kanchenjunga, it was still a nice experience, I enjoyed being in nature - cool breeze, fresh air and trees all around me. 𝘈𝘮𝘪 𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘬 𝘬𝘩𝘶𝘴𝘩𝘪. 🇮🇳💖🏔️🧳

Don't waste your time. Most of the times due to bad weather you cannot see anything worthwhile. Plus, the commute is harrowing. You could be stuck in traffic for hours due to too many vehicles on a small stretch of road. If you want to visit just to see the wilderness, do so in the afternoon or evening.

There are beautiful views from this place across both Darjeeling & Kanchenjunga in clear weather (with even Mt Everest barely visible if your luckier) although it was foggy when I visited. It was nice to go there despite the fog blocking the view, however, the main reason I haven't given four or five stars is that the car park at the viewpoint area featured some abandoned construction works (it is disappointing to see this at an otherwise significant viewpoint and I sure hope that is addressed in the future) and that there wasn't anything else to see or utilise there (no information point, café/restaurant or toilets).

A very touristic place of Darjeeling but full of nature. We visited Tiger hill for some birding and boss we were amazed, so much of diversity is at this place.
You will experience much crowd but if you arrive early then can have good chance of sighting birds in silence.
Its quite famous for sighiting common hill pattridge and after waiting for 3 hrs he just came out

It was a spectacular view from Tiger hill of 'Kanchanjangha' the third highest mountain in the world of 8,586m. Tiger hill is of 2590m. Before visiting, it is necessary to google the time of sunrise. It will take 45 mints from mall road to Tiger hill by car. After the car drops, we had to climb for 15 minutes to finally reach the top. We were lucky as it was not cloudy and we clearly saw the mountains. There was coffee available for 20 rs. and also you can rent a telescopic view. We tried to click some photos but honestly the eyes are far better than the camera. It was a very good exeperience.

We walked up from Jorebungalow. Recommend this only if you start at 4:00 am, to be ahead of the endless rush of fume and dust spewing jeeps. Thousands at the top, with huge viewing structure useable, but still under construction. Interestingly, while we were focused on the High Himalaya views, most were focused on the sunrise to the east. So photo ops easier for us. After the thousands rushed out to the next stop on the jeep tour, the walk down was absolutely beautiful in solitude.

We had to leave the hotel very early to reach this place before sunrise. It was a cold walk in the early morning to reach the view point. There were hundreds of vehicles before us, and thousands of people already.
The experience was good and the view was fabulous.

Once upon a time it was a unique experience. But now it is an overhyped activity while visiting Darjeeling.
There are now so many spots from where you can see an amazing sunrise. As such, importance of Tiger hill is downgoing.
Another problem is too many people causing massive crowds. Besides, a lot of construction work is happening in the location (a natural consequence of tourist footfall). As such the original charm of the place is not there.

Heavenly experience, what can be more mesmerising than watching the sunrise at one side and watching its reflection on the Kanchenjunga mountains on the other side

Can you go to tiger hill in your personal car? Any permits or passes are required? Also we will be a driving in a sedan; can the the car manage the road. After reading many of reviews and comments on the we are not really interested in the sunrise, so was thinking of going later on around 10 A.M . Is it worth the trip? We would be going in middle of December, so i guess it would be cloudy.

Yes a permit is required - I do not know how to get it as it was arranged by driver. I guess it is for car only as he did not ask identities. You can drive sedan there, seen few wagon R there.
Better to skip sunrise, it is a risky to be there at 5 am and no guarantee of visibility due to clouds, specifically in December.

Don't climb, it's a long walk, couple of hours, not for a small child. Take a taxi, plenty going that way before sunrise and will bring you back too.
Can sunrise view be seen in month of February from tiger hill? Is it advisable?

Hi, we were there in December. As we were there for 2 days we decided to gamble and avoid the sunrise chaos and we went at 10am and it was brilliant. It had rained the day before and the day we went had perfect blue skies. We were so happy to have read previous reviews that said the sunrise was unpleasant due to long walks in the dark and the amount of people. I know this doesn't answer your question but if you're lucky to have a clear day then you're in for a treat. The view is spiritual.
Hello.... I am planning to visit tiger hill from ghoom in mid of December...Tell me the way to reach tiger hill?

You can go Tiger hill directly from Ghoom. But it's little bit not so easy. Better, first you have to go Darjeeling town and accommodation a hotel. And then in early morning you have to go tiger hill with a share or reserve taxi. Not so far from DJ town OR you can ask a hotel manager to find it properly. Much Thanks.

We could also get a great view from Glenary's Bakery restaurant in Darjeeling...we sat on the tables in the open balcony which provides you a picturesque view of the mountain range

Planning 3 days in Darjeeling with Tiger Hill visit. Where else could we visit for about a week before from Bagdogra Airport? We enjoy not too challenging hiking, wildlife, local culture and less touristy destinations.

I would suggest spend the max time in Sikkim, about 2 days in Darjeeling should suffice.
Hi! I am planning to visit with my infant. Can I take the baby stroller along?
Aditya K

Taking baby stroller is tiresome job as you need to walk and climb around 500 m and that too in early morning i.e. something around at 4:00 hrs. So the decision lies on you.
Can we spend 1or2hour at any time of a day except sunrise and sunset time?????

Our visit was just for the sunrise (18 Oct 2017). I can't imagine any reason to go another time. To see the sky start to lighten, glowing rays hitting the Himalayas over the misty blue valleys was magic and what it's all about.
Some practical comments: We left Darjeeling at 4:30am - but our clever tour driver parked way down the hill where no other vehicles were when we arrived (still dark). That made for a quick getaway. A concrete tiered grandstand was under construction when we were there. Many people were there when we arrived and even with people using the grandstand tiers. Even so, it was still hard to get a spot that didn't obstruct someone else, but gave a clear view.
That's what we think after our visit.
Hope this helps!
