Neighbourhood: George Town/Parry’s Corner
George Town is one of the busiest and most commercial neighbourhoods of Chennai.
It may not boast of pubs or restaurants, but it surely offers something that the rest of Chennai can’t - a strong whiff of history. This historical area located in north Chennai is where the city of Madras was officially born in 1640 alongside Fort St. George. A walk here leads you to the well-established specialised bazaars and wholesale markets selling everything under the sun: fabrics, fruits, vegetables, spices, fabrics, camera, perfumes, jewellery, etc. Home to the High Court and other State institutions and famous for a large resident Sindhi and Marwari community, George Town is a rich congregation of shrines of different faiths within its boundaries – from Hindu and Jain temples to churches, mosques and synagogue. If you are craving some authentic North Indian food, head to streets of Sowcarpet for chaat, vada pav and other popular street snacks.

It was very ideally located as we stayed at the Grand Chennai by GRT. As the place is well known for its shopping it was a great experience as the whole street, Sir Thayagarya Road, T Nagar is full of shops. Apart from main streets, there are smaller streets that also has shops. As it is a famous place for shopping, shop owners take full advantage and things are very expensive. Prices are same or more expensive than the shopping malls like express mall. Communication can be a problem as salespeople do not speak fluent english. Hindi too can be a problem. Another drawback is the constant negging by the street dwellers who are either begging or selling things which they insist you to buy.
Not many clean eateries except for some big restaurants like A2B and Balaji. KFC is also available.

Pondy bazar is one of the old shopping areas of Chennai. A very busy street separates shops on either side of the road. Small stand alone shops to huge branded outlets can be found here in addition to eateries of all types. Shopping arcades are also available for those who prefer all shopping under single roof. This place is very close to leading textiles and jewellery outlets of T Nagar.

We visited Rathna Stores in Pondy Bazaar, 5 levels of household items. It had everything you need at reasonable price. The staff are helpful and friendly. Just a few rows away, you can get earrings from another shop at good rates.

Where are the street shops located now? It's been a while I visited pondy bazaar. I was surprised to see no street shops there. I got to know they were relocated to a shopping camp Lexington. Can anyone tell the exact location of it?

It is located in a multi storey building in Pondy bazaar almost opposite to Naidu Hall. It has a separate gate but no parking inside the complex.
