Chennai's Lighthouse, also known as Madras Lighthouse, is a captivating landmark that offers a blend of history, stunning views, and a serene environment. After visiting the Vizhinjam Light House
in Thiruvananthapuram, I had to visit the Chennai lighthouse in Marina Beach in Chennai.
The entry fees are the same and they do not charge you extra for using your mobile phone to take pictures. They charge you extra only if you use a regular camera.
(Digital, SLR, etc).
The queues are short and you can only use the lift to get to the observation deck above the 9th floor.
Once you reach the top, you are allowed only 10 minutes to view the beach and its surroundings. It's still worth it.
The lighthouse is closed on Mondays.
There is a museum (open for free ) on the ground floor behind the main entrance.

This lighthouse which gives a 360 degree view is an experience to be had. The climb is done by elevator (except for the top floor). It only takes a few minutes at the top to admire the view. Especially on Marina beach and the green buildings, fishermen's homes on the beach.
We were there at the hot time of midday and Marina Beach was deserted!

Marina Beach, Chennai is by far among the best beaches in India. But, if you have not experienced it atop the Light House, you missed its breathtaking beauty. There is a museum there too. A very inconspicuous tower that you could easily ignore as you pass the road. And yet, as you experience its view it leaves behind an eternal impression of Chennai's uniqueness, history and beauty.

If you are at the beach then head south of the Luz junction and opposite the commissioners office you will find the light house. It has a paid entrance and you can go up to have a view of the city, harbour and the sea. Its pretty good for the young and young at heart.

Do not miss to take a tour of the light house in Chennai.
Went on 21.03.2015 evening at 5:30 pm.
Visit is to the Light House and the Museum. Lift takes you to the 8th floor and you need to climb to the 9th floor. The place on the 9th floor, visitors area is pretty small and good enough for approx 25-30 people. You get a very good view of Chennai skyline and the Marina beach. Windows are secured by grills for safety. Spent 15-20 minutes there, and took pictures. You come down by the same lift, and then proceed to the Museum. Very interesting and informative for Children including adults. There is a short AV, must see to know about our coast and related aspects. Total time taken for the visit is between 60 to 90 minutes.

Just you can go to have a bird eye view of the city and its very near to Marina Beach. The ninth floor of the tower has a viewing gallery where steel welded mesh panels have been erected for safety. This has been done to avoid suicide attempts which were witnessed in the past.

Marina Beach is huge and you will only understand it if you take the top view of the beach from the light house. I think it is open six days a week, 10 am to 1 pm and 3 pm to 5 pm. Go there with a good camera.. you will surely cherish the panorama image. Awesome view of the road also which runs parallel to the beach.

5) Plenty of Public transport buses frequently ply on the beach road, Call taxi from mobile can be booked. In addition, Auto also available.

No birthday celebrations allowed, as there is others waiting to view the security people urge us to get down quickly.
There is many buses available to get down at light house stop.

My dear friend. For security reasons, people are not allowed to be at the top most Point in the Light house for more than ten or fifteen minutes. At the bottom of the Light house, a small park with benches for sitting / chatting is available. Private partying say up to 5 or 6 persons in a group is permitted, after getting permission. But why confine yourself in a small area ? You have the Great Gandhi Beach area just 100 meters from the Light house, where you can have fun, frolick, Ice cream etc and celebrate, up to a reasonable time, say 10.00 PM.Come and enjoy the beautiful place, with or without kids, as per your wish. I shall say, with kids, because they will simply love to play in the sand, take a horse ride, have a stroll near the sea shore, stand safely in the beach shore to enjoy waves with parents/grand parents and enjoy their cup of Ice creams.
