Neighbourhood: Besant Nagar
Named after the noted lady theosophist Annie Besant, Besant Nagar is one of the most preferred areas to reside in Chennai due to the presence of the beach. The extremely calm and serene area with its colonial hangover is studded with sea- facing homes owned by the affluent families and has a string of restaurants, cafes, shops and boutiques around it. Home to Elliot’s Beach, The Theosophical Society and Kalakshetra, the world famous dance school along with beautiful temples and churches, this is where Chennai loves to chill. The confluence of best of nature, art and history within the greenest parts of the city limits is evident in the culture of this neighbourhood, which makes it one of the most favourite hangout zones for all the locals.

This is a very holy and an olden temple of the deity Mahalaksmi. This temple has a hidden pathway which leads to some of the oldest statues of Mahalaksmi. The statues of deities are still washed and clothed with silk sarees. Anyone who prays for wealth will be granted in this temple. When we visited this temple it was at nite time 8pm lucky the volunteer running the temple helped us and told us to hurry to see the deepam lit up at the top altar of the temple.

It is a small temple tucked away beside the Elliots beach. There is a parking spot beside the temple on a narrow road. You enter the temple and there are barricades guiding you around the 8 Lakshmi's, eight forms of wealth, namely, offspring, success, prosperity, wealth, courage, bravery, food, and knowledge.. You start with Lakshmi and Vishnu. Then you go to Santhanalakshmi, Vijayalakshmi, Vidyalakshmi and Gajalakshmi. The top floor DhanaLakshmi is rumoured to act like a lighthouse. Then Aadilakshmi, Dhaanya lakshmi and Dharyalakshmi. See the gold plating on the top.

This is a unique Ashta-Lakshmi temple built for goddess Lakshmi to depict all her Ashta (Eight) Avatars. The temple is right next to the beach and one can have ample car parking. The temple is going thru some painting of renovation, and you can see many construction materials around the temple. Temple needs a better crowd management system, otherwise this is a beautiful temple.

You climb about 20-30 steps to see this beautiful temple that is right on the beach in Chennai. We went on New Year's Day so there was a mela happening on the beach. Had really good darshan and a fantastic overall experience.

the temple is located in a very picturesque place, alone the beach. the layout of different Lakshmi sanctums are kind of one above the other. never seen such a temple architecture.
the priest were just money minded. they expect a big tip & till they get it, they are pestering us. very irritating behavior. due to that, lost the purpose of visit.

I went to this temple many times during 2015. The main Mahalakshmi temple moolavar is covered with silver/metal cover on the head. While the Gurukal removes the cover as well as at the back side and in the entire area of the moolaval of Mahalakshmi temple all the areas are covered with small cockroaches. The oil pans are also contains lot of small dead cockroaches. The Gurukkal concentrates only for the collection of tips for performing pooja and they are not maintaining. I don't know where this matter has to be brought to known to rectify the deficiency in maintenance.

It is an exquisite temple with typical south indian temple architecture that is located very very close to sea shore near Besant Nagar, Chennai. It houses 8 different forms of goddesses of wealth and prosperity i.e God Lakshmi Devi. The temple is layered on multiple levels from ground up and is so serene to see and experience divinity.

Situated on Chennai's beach the Ashtalakshmi temple is a beautiful temple to visit. It houses many smaller temples in its complex that comprises shrines of all the eight appellations of the goddess of wealth and beauty. So, it may take almost an hour to complete a tour of this ancient heritage which was badly affected by the tsunami that hit southern India in 2004. Recommended! (Don't forget to have some street food and spicy snacks along with coconut water on the road near the beach after your darshan)
