Valluvar kottam is situated in the heart of Chennai (Madras) city in Nungambakkam. It is a monument constructed in memory of great tamil poet "Thiruvalluvar" who wrote two lines songs, which is called "Thirukural". Monument looks like temple-chariot built 40 years back. This place is tourist attraction.Improvement is required in maintenance.

The monument is huge and beautiful, but rather poorly maintained. Just a one hour visit I suppose is more than enough. There are vendors that sell all sorts of stuff at a rather expensive rate. Just hop in and hop out if you're on a chennai trip.

This monolithic structure built in honour of the great tamil poet tiruvalluvar situated in the heart of chennai cries for more attention than what it is getting now.The monolithic wheels of the chariot are a marvel to watch and ghe central hall has the 1330 verses engraved all around the pillar like structure in the first floor. The stairways leadingto the first floor and thence to the roof needs to have supports for the elderly and they are not disabled friendly.The rooftop is an excellent place to spend an evening which is well evident by the number of couples who are present there.The hall is usually used for conducting one exhibition or the other. This attraction also lacks proper restroom facility and refreshments.so one cannot spend more time here.Steps if taken towards improving the sanitation, food and safety features can make this a far better tourist attraction.

Go there with your family for a few hours of history and relaxation. I used to chase snails there, when I was a kid. Slow recreation :)

I visited baklava kottam first time on 27.3.14. Utter waste. Only a chariot in stone. A busy area land wasted . It should be made a park .

After seeing a couple of impressive pictures in the internet we included it in our itinerary. But it was a great disappointment. The whole area was very badly kept. The lawns poorly maintained and not to speak about the auditorium. The only thing displayed there was the achievements of the present government!
Ofcourse the stone chariot was very impressive. Thiruvalluvar statue can hardly be seen in the darkness!! Last but not the least the toilets were without water and in a dilapidated state.

Its a wonderful place to visit. Nice atmosphere.Its a replica of the Thiruvarur chariot.The chariot consists of 133 adigarangal inscripted in it.

I have went there to see the Stone built I dint know how to mention it. The atmosphere there is peaceful could have a wonderful time there.

I have visited this Monument several times before but I visited this time because there was a fair(exhibition) going on. This modern monument was initially planned and Built by Mr.Karunanidhi, ex.Chief Minister of Tamilnadu state, in memory of the great Poet Thiruvalluvar ( Author of Thirukkural). All the 1330 Thirkkural was inscribed on the inner walls of the massive Hall. A replica of a Chariot was installed on the side built mainly by stones and cement which is very huge and imposing. For a few years in the beginning this was used for all literary seminars and Govt. Functions and was well maintained. Presently it is being rented out for exhibitions, handloom and handicrafts fair etc..I visited one such handicraft fair on 15-10-2017. present day maintenance is not so good. There is ample Free car parking area inside the compound

A quick visit was justified when, on a visit to the US Visa Application Center, I found that this monument is just across the road. Knowing that this is a tribute to the great saint-poet Thirukkural, I expected a rich, cultural experience.
The entry ticket is a paltry Rs. 3 per person and from that moment I became a little skeptical about what I was going to find inside the gate. A highly subsidised entry ticket almost always precedes poorly maintained places.
My fears were justified... the garden leading up to a large auditorium beyond a flight of steps was perhaps an aspiring lawn 30 years ago. Now, it was just a mass of dry weeds. The auditorium was a large concrete hall with a stage decorated by portraits of ancient poets. Behind the auditorium was the famed gigantic stone chariot with elephant statues looking truly impressive.
Despite the noble intention of paying a tribute to the great poet, the monument was a disappointment at two levels. One, the material used to build a monument that was clearly intended to be a lasting tribute seemed of poor quality, so that in about 30 years of its construction, the paint on the walls have peeled off and it looks way older than it is.
Two, the entire place is poorly maintained and hardly any effort seems to have gone into preserving and enhancing its beauty.
The experience left me sad although at the very premise I was glad that in these modern times of instant gratification and future-focus, someone had thought of building a monument to honour historical legacy. What was disappointing was how half-heartedly it seemed to have been done. Most monuments we celebrate today have taken great, unimaginable amount of painstaking labour because the leaders then had a vision of building structures that would last for centuries. And they have stood tests of time way beyond even their expectations. It's a pity that with all our modern expertise and technology we can't manage half the feat!
I know this sounds more like a rant than a review, but it's a testimony of how little there was and how much of could-have-been to write about.
Visit if you feel a sentimental connection for Tamil Nadu's history, legacy, poetry, language and monuments, even if this is a lesson in how not to do tributes. If none of this interests you, you will have nothing much to do.
