A quiet, humbling place
Feb 2020
Also known as San Thome Cathedral, one of India's best-known sites containing the Sacred Heart Shrine and a relic bone of St. Thomas, the apostle who arrived on the shores of India in the 1st century AD. A wedding was taking place and the church was full of happy families and flowers; the hymns could be heard in the churchyard, making this a lovely living church. The relic bone of St. Thomas is in a separate underground crypt where several people were quietly praying. A nice place to visit, non-commercial but with a little tea shop for those in need. No entrance fee.

The famous Catholic Shrine of Chennai for the Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus
Dec 2019
The church, originally established in the year 1848 with Rev. Fr. Jerome from Portugal as the first Parish Priest, has become famous for the devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in 1954 when Rev. Fr. A. J. Adaikalam was the Parish Priest. Since then the Shrine has gained popularity among the Catholics for the devotion to the Sacred Heart, adoration of the sacred Five Wounds made by the nails and the spear, and also to venerate the body of Christ died on the Cross (symbolised by the statue). Therefore, large number of pilgrims come here to venerate particularly on Fridays, and more specifically on the First Fridays of every month. On the Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, thousands of pilgrims visit the shrine for the adoration.
Later, on the 8th of September 2005, the church has been elevated as a Shrine of the Archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore. The present shrine, what we see is the newly constructed one with the foundation stone blessed on 17th April 2009 and consecrated on the 21st June 2013. Yet you can find a little Gothic architectural style and stained glass images.
The shrine is on the Pantheon Road in the historic Pudupet, in the heart of Chennai, just 400 m from the Pudupet Bus Stop, 600 m from the Egmore RS and 3 Km from the Chennai Central RS, very well connected by city road services.
