About
Story-based walking tours and short excursions that zig-zag through the beat and the pulse of the city; from its oldest parts to its busy bazaars, through dance and art to its rural heart. Unlike sight-seeing tours, these trails focus on the everyday sights on the streets - the local customs, symbolisms and the fascinating stories behind the mundane rituals of life. Hosted by a team of articulate storytellers, these trails are an enjoyable way for visitors to appreciate the local way of life. Pick from nine different tours in Chennai.
Chennai (Madras), Tamil Nadu, India

Hello travelers to India. I have taken 6 trips to India so far with countless tours of temples, cities, and monuments and Nayantara from Storytrails walking tour in Chennai stands out as an exceptional guide. Very knowledgable about the areas toured and also highly engaging. Our tour was in English and our guide had perfect proficiency. I feel I have gained a deeper understanding of life and culture in India from my morning tour. You may think that the price is high but let me explain, it is better to spend more money on a quality tour in India than on a cheap one where the guide can not speak language well, poor knowledge of area, and mainly directing you to shops to get commission. In 10 years, you won’t care about the small money extra, but you will appreciate what you have learned.

The old city of Chennai is full of fascinating and often hidden food gems - if you know where to find them! Our excellent and personable guide Laksmi was certainly a very experienced and knowledgeable person to lead us through the labyrinths of old Chennai and finding great snacks and exquisite local food items of very high quality and spicing it up with interesting background stories during our afternoon trip. In addition we really received a touch and feel for the diversified and crowded street food scene and market places where literally everything was available and for sale.
A great trip with full stomachs - made so much more lively due to our excellent guide!

A really lovely tour of the French quarters in Pondicherry. A microcosm of world history, interactions between cultures, human drama, self-interests of people, all were conveyed - our hostess was truly knowledgeable and loves her subject. She was able to make key characters in Pondicherry's history feel alive and present. All of us - my wife, baby, her grandmother, a family friend and myself enjoyed the few hour tour. I think it made a huge difference in how we could appreciate and feel a part of that community.

Earlier this month, Lakshmi Shankar from Storytrails took me on a walking tour through the Mylapore district of Chennai. The focus was predominantly on the Kapaleeswharar Temple and the Santhomme Basilica Cathedral where she brought everything to life with her wonderful story telling. This was not a traditional tour as such but so much the better for that. There is so much to absorb and understand but you will certainly feel enriched for the experience. If you have the opportunity to use Storytrails then I would highly recommend them to you.

How does one describe Chennai, sixth largest city of India, largest of Southern India. If one goes by the traffic, Chennai is seemingly chaos, even with a professional car and chauffeur. Buildings flash by too quickly to take them in or take a picture. And with no one to explain, one concludes the whole city is but organized chaos as it races toward becoming a very modern IT center and many institutions of higher learning.

But what if one had a guide, a retired history teacher, one who lives in Chennai, loves Chennai. And what if this guide from Story Trails could give a personalized tour to help one discover the history of the British and their churches? Now Chennai begins to make sense, and the chaos recedes into the background along with the many billboards and city walls. Now we are talking about flesh and blood people, with stories which are honest, without the usual attempt to make over the past into a politically correct present.

That is what you get with a Story Trails guided tour. Something more than one reads in a book. Something more than hurried impressions. Something about real people in a city that is going somewhere.

Awesome hours with Akila in an old neighbourhood in Chennai. Story-based tour of temples, history, place and people offers a terrific and thoughtful new lens to touring around a city. And Akila took the concept to its top potential with her warmth, humour, passion, energy, insight and sophisticated approach. We heard old items told in new ways, laughed a lot and enjoyed every moment of our roughly three hours, capped off with a snack of South Indian coffee and idli. Hugely recommended.

Shobanna, our storyteller, explained in detail about the history of the market and vegetables. It was very crowded, so many scooter bikes and honking, varieties of fruits, vegetables, and smell. But with local guide, I listened to my storyteller and her explanation. It was a good experience.

This was one of the best guided tours that I have ever taken! The concept of the tour is great: Telling stories and not just numbers and facts. Our guide brought this to perfection. She was telling lively and was extremely knowledgeable whenever there were questions.

I went on two tours organised by Storytrails: the Bazaar and Peacock trails. Both in Chennai. My guides were very helpful and informative. I learned a lot about the city and its people. I would definitely recommend Storytrails to anyone coming to India for the first time.
