The Sun Temple or Surya Mandir is a Hindu temple located hill on the Aravali Hills to the east of Jaipur. I heard it was a popular pilgrimage site, so I decided to take an auto to the foothills of Aravali and climb. It turns out there’s lots of Hindu temples along the climb and you get to see pilgrims on their way up or down. It’s quite fascinating meeting some of the devotees and the lengths they go for their devotion.

Mainly I just wanted to climb for the exercise. I thought the temple was okay, nothing spectacular. Fine to visit if you’ve got a couple of days in Jaipur and need a challenge. Definitely one for the devotees.

The temple lies on the outskirts of Jaipur and then one has to walk on a rocky barren gorge for around 300 metres. The temple isn't very huge but gives you a divine feeling once inside. Moreover, the backside of the temple gives a panaromic view of the entire city.Surely, one should visit as not many Sun temples are there in India. While returning one can go to galta temple also but the route isn't very safe.

About 2.5 km from the centre of Jaipur through the red gate of Surajpol Bazaar a 200m cobblestone path winds its way up to the small 18th Century Sun Temple with its great views of Jaipur and setting sun. It is part of the Galta Temple complex (aka Monkey Temple) and there is a hiking route which joins the main pink stone buildings of the Temple of Galta to Surya Mandir.

At the Surya Mandir (Sun Temple) we had an opportunity to meet the priest, who is the 4th generation of his family to hold the position, and his wife, as well as other visitors who were kind enough to engage in conversation.

The approximate 15-20 minute climb is punctuated by monkeys, ready to grab any edibles you might have, plus cattle, goats and the poor who sell simple religious mementoes and spread out lengths of bright cloth in order to catch whatever grains may be tossed in their direction by considerates. We were told by a family, who walk the pilgrimage every day during the month of November, that the grains are collected each evening and pooled to make a dinner shared by these less fortunate.

To get to the Sun Temple, we (4 adults) hired an auto rickshaw. We actually hired it for the afternoon to take us to the Albert Hall Museum, the Sun Temple, Amber Fort and Water Palace.

Surprisingly, for its simplicity, the Sun Temple and its climb has become a most pleasant and cherished memory of our time in Jaipur.

This small temple sits on top of a fairly steep 3-400 metre climb on the outskirts of Jaipur and when you first approach the bottom of the climb you can be excused for thinking you have made a mistake and ended up in a fairly bleak looking area. Immediately from getting out of our taxi I come face to face with a monkey. Just sitting a few feet in front of me looking me up and down. This is a common sight from here to the top of the hill to the temple. There are many monkeys to keep us occupied as we walk the steep climb in near 40 degree heat. Best to wear some sturdy shoes as the path is not the best. The climb twists back and forth until you reach a set of buildings near the top, where there are an abundance of monkeys. All pretty tame seemingly but we don't get too close just in case. The last stretch of path takes us up to the simple and small, though attractive, Sun Temple and from here the views across Jaipur are second to none. It is the views and the interaction with the monkeys that really makes this trip worthwhile and this is not meant to be disrespectful to the temple. This is also a most peaceful and serene spot. All in all it's all free of charge but the exertion during the heat may be too much for some. However, if you can make it to the top then the views are spectacular. As a tip, make sure you have plenty of water with you if it is hot and also some cover as the shade is very limited on the climb.

When we started clicking our pictures in our camera we realized that this temple is so photogenic. The temple is situated at a good height so you can see the panoramic view of Jaipur. I loved the place as its quite best to see the natural view of the pink city - jaipur. A must visit. Stairs are quite a bit so carry good amount of water with you and the food is not available for purchase so buy some food stuff and go. Nice temple, great view.

There weren’t many tourists when we visited the famous tourist spot and the temple was really peaceful. My sister’s an architect and I appreciated the live view and architectural structure more when she discussed about its history and what the attraction stood for. The temple was beautiful and serene. A peaceful place to unwind and not think about the busy life you have back home. We didn’t stay long and we had to walk back again to our ride but it was an enriching experience to get a feel of the culture of Jaipur through its tourist spots and attractions. The carvings of the place speak about a lot of stories and I would love to have been there back in time. A lovely place to visit
