- Apurva ManePune District, India2 contributionsCrawford Market - from 'desi' to 'videsi' at one place .The place with a historical building - structure, the place we get all kinds of food ; from local to foreign delicates. I visited this place in the month of December 2023 with my friends and I can say that it should be on your bucket list. It has all varieties of food, drinks, also there is shopping lane for clothes and home decor. All this at one stop that is CRAWFORD MARKET; and that too at reasonable and cheap rate when bought in bulk. All in all a good place and a must visit when you are in Mumbai :)Visited December 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 10 January 2024
- Caroline KramerMumbai, India27 contributionsIt's and Indian Market, be preparedIt is what it says on the tin, it is an Indian market. It is not aimed at tourists. You will be asked by every other stall holder to buy stuff. Do not stop unless you really want something because the clothing stalls will literally take dozens of things out to show you and it can be hard to get away. It is great when you want something but if you do it at each stall you will be worn out. I was there on a Saturday and both the street market and the clothing market were very busy. This is how Indian markets are. You will get nudged by mopeds and yelled at by people wheeling wagons and carrying enormous packages on their heads. Most places want cash. Although I was not buying high end, they might take electronic. It's really interesting and fun. The street market has everything you could want but this is not a craft market, this is what people buy for life. If you don't like noise and jostle, this is not for you. If you are wanting street food make sure you look to see how they are washing cups and plates. You are more likely to get sick from poorly washed plates than from the food. I am contemplating purchasing a plate so I can try some things. I already have a stainless steel cup in my bag but wasn't not in a juice or sugar cane mood. There were a couple of banana stands. These are a safe go to snack. The other thing to say is that at some stalls if you are foreign you will get overcharged. I look at it with the view that I have a privileged life financially and I don't mind a little up charge. If it is egregious walk away. I checked with an Indian friend about bartering, she said it is not a big thing, it can work but she does not tend to barter.Visited January 2024Travelled soloWritten 27 January 2024
- Discover110117918121 contributionDo you research before venturing. Prices are hyped. Except for spices which are mentioned on the jars. Most shops only open late mornings. So it would be best time for browsing early in the morning . Later on it gets crammed up and totally chaotic. People keep calling you from everywhere to buy everything and empty your wallet. Everyone has online payment options but most of shops prefer cash for the first transaction of the day signalling good luck. Most of the goods are priced at double if not triple the rate so just quote your price and walk away till they call you back and agree with your price. For example imitation perfumes from Burberry, mont Blanc, Lacoste etc are quoted at 700 rupees whereas the adjacent shops sell for 250 rupees. Body sprays for 150 rupees are good steal as long as you don't use them on your body. But rather on your clothes just for a change. Some Shops will show you some genuine bottles of perfumes claiming to be original tester sets. The bottles are genuine but cannot trust the liquid inside which could be neutral injected spirit and cost around 800 rupees as claimed by the shopkeepers. Guerlain,Lancome,CK,Davidoff,Issey Miyake are all available without box. Food items like cheese chocolates and milk powder are available in most shops for decent price like a bag of 100 pc chocolates for 200 rs or good quality for 380 bucks. Kraft cheese for 220 rupees . Tang powder for 220 rupees etc etc... . Good deal to gift to your family and friends. But doing shopping and caring those bags and roaming around is a hassle. It's totally crowded outside and forget train travel with those bulky bags. Duffle bags are sold on the roadside for 300 rupees initially quoting 600 rs. It's good for a experience. You will also need one full day to travel from the suburbs, browse, shop and then return. Rather order online the same items instead of getting mugged by the shopkeepers. And trampled by the crowd in the train. Since trains are the fastest means of transport in Mumbai as compared to Uber. Or rather travel by scooter if you are living close by.Visited February 2024Travelled soloWritten 25 February 2024
- William SKobe, Japan1,527 contributionsBusy and ColourfulCrawford Market is a busy, noisy, colorful and active market. It isn’t designed for the occasional buyer so just go to look, watch and listen. There are many vendors offering produce, candies, materials and supplies. There are many people around - those who stock, those who carry purchases, customers, suppliers, etc. Be sure to stay out of the way.Visited March 2024Travelled soloWritten 23 March 2024

We arrived at the market to be met by a guide who said he would show us around, we said we were happy to wander by ourselves - eh then showed us a sign stating that porters were mandatory but no payment was required. He took us to a spice stall, a fruit and veg stall then hustled us along another aisle and then we were back at the entrance.....I wanted to see where the animals were so he grudgingly took us there. Then he was not happy when we didn't pay him. Not a great experience, I have been in far more interesting markets in the Far East and have never had a "guide" before. The architecture is interesting but you can see that from the exterion, I wouldn't go back there.

This market is huge and has everything under the sun ...flowers, spices, fabric, fruits and vegetables, clothing, tea, pets and birds, sweets, and nuts. There are also cosmetics, perfumes, and handbags which seem to have good prices, but they are knock-offs. The whole place is dirty, crowded, and too much for me. One quick visit was enough.

Left because the spice stall owners were hassling us to visit their respective stalls. Despite me getting angry and telling them to leave us alone they just followed us around trying to steer us in the direction of their goods. At one point two of them started arguing about which of them saw us first!
We just left which is a shame because we wanted to root around the place and spend money!

This is a great market indoors with original features from early 19th century.
Felt very safe with lors of little side stands selling fabulous spices, fabrics fruit, flowers. etc. We visited on a cruise but were not allowed much time to explore the area properly which was a shame.

The place is over crowded but you may get everything you need for daily use. Cosmetic, bags, electronics , fruits, vegetables, spices, pet animals, birds etc etc etc. If you are not Indian you will be puzzled. Here most products are cheap but quality is low. Many shops sell pirated cosmetics, perfumes etc. So beware while shopping. You can get good quality fruits here. I took my kids to pet animals and birds shops , they found these shops very exciting but the area was dirty. Area where Fruit and pet animal shops are situated is very unhygienic. Some touts sell duplicate international brand perfumes on roadsides, so take care if you are dealing with them. This market may be good for local people but for tourists it’s not good place to shop.

For Tourists this is probably the most well known market in South Mumbai.
Not very far beyond Chhatrapati Shivaji Railway Terminus. Just make sure you go to the left of the flyover & not right like I did at first.
I believe that the market , unlike many , does not get going properly until late morning so no point in getting there too early.
The main building dates from the 1860's & was donated to the city by Cowasji Jehangir. ( the convocation Hall of Bombay University bears his name , too ).
It is interesting to note the carved panels above the entrance , 2 of them carried out by Rudyard Kipling's father , John Lockwood Kipling.
Once inside you will find a high , skylit roof & a stone fountain. All the aisles are well lit & various stalls are piled high with a dazzling array of goods : Vegetables , fruit , dried fruit , nuts , spices , chocolate , household goods & any amount of jars & packets containing a bewildering array of sauces , olives , jelly mixes etc.
Most fruit sellers had a delicious looking pile of Alphonse Mangos on display.
I kept well away from the pet section , not wishing to witness the caged birds that I could hear.
To one side of the main entrance there is a dingy shed area used exclusively for the sale of fruit & vegetables.
This was the first Market in the whole of India to be lit by electricity.

Crawford market is one of the best places if you are going shopping either wholesale or retail. The place is crowded since 11 am till 9 pm with lots of people who come from suburban areas and different parts of India to buy products to resale them in their own area. Also a lot of locals looking for discounted products for their day today use. You everything from pin to pet animals, food items decorative items chocolates, nits dates, fruits vegetables. You name it they have it. Only thing is to find them due to its vast area which is covered, also it is adjacent to Bhuleshwar market.
What is more exciting is the pace of business being done from this area.

Hello
U will be visiting mumbai soon. Are there saree, salwar shops in crawford market. I can see only spices and fruits as per reviews.
Thank you
Written 28 March 2018
Nopes. There are no Saree places in the market. But there are quite a few in the surrounding areas. For clothing related stuff try Pydhonie, marine lines, Kalbadevi, Mangaldas, etc. ask the locals for exactly what you want and I'm sure they'll be more than happy to help.
