About Reality Tours and Travel
Reality Tours and Travel is a responsible tour operator providing fun and authentic experiences around India. We invest 80% of our profits back into the communities we visit through our NGO Reality Gives. We are especially well known for our educational Dharavi Slum Tour that shows visitors the industrial and residential areas of one of Asia’s largest slums, located in the heart of Mumbai. We also offer city, village, multi-day and customized tours and we recently expanded to New Delhi and the Sanjay Colony Slum. Our tours educate visitors about the issues as well as opportunities in slums and hopes to encourage them to understand underprivileged communities better. We use 80% of the tour profits and 100% of merchandise profits to fund our sister-NGO Reality Gives that runs and supports a variety of programs in Dharavi and Sanjay Colony. Our goal is to provide authentic and though-provoking local experiences through our tours and to use the profits to create change in our communities. Our vision is a world where all tourism promotes cross-cultural understanding and local development. Our NGO, Reality Gives, provides young people in the local community with high quality education and experiences to help them maximize their potential. We do this by focusing on English, Computer and Life Skills classes as well as a series of activities and workshop in expressive art and sport. We run these program out of three community centres around Dharavi.

As much as I have wanted to visit Dharavi for many years I felt conflicted. I did not want to impose on the people and feel like I was intruding and objectifying their situation. So I did some research and found Reality Tours. I appreciated how they give 80% of earnings to their affiliated NGO Reality Gives. I decided this was the best and only way to do a Dharavi slum tour responsibly. The tour was amazing in every way. Our guide J was knowledgeable and lively. He showed us the various industries including leather making, pottery and recycling. Dharavi has some ingenuous small business practises. Everyone returned my smiles and head bobbles with enthusiasm (I love in India how people can go from scowling at you to lighting up with a huge smile if you do the Indian head wobble to them). People seemed happy to see us and not put out. It helps that Reality has a no photography rule. Reality has struggled during covid and really needs the tourists to come back. The much needed funds go to supporting Reality Gives providing English lessons to give young people a chance to change their future. The tour guides, who were once recipients of these lessons, are a testimony to the programs success. Amazing people. Keep up the good work J and team! If you are thinking of going to Dharavi I highly recommend it as one of the more authentic experiences you can have in not only Mumbai but India more broadly. And if you feel conflicted about the ethical and moral aspects, look no further then Reality Tours!

We did the Old Delhi Street food tour and it was excellent. Our guide, Mr. Abhishek, was great! Not only was he wonderful with explaining the history found in Old Delhi, he made us feel comfortable walking the busy streets. The food was also excellent. I would highly recommend this tour for people interested in learning more about Delhi and who love to eat.

We had a very impressive tour inside the Dharavi Slum with our small group (4 people) and our guide. The guide‘s English was good and as he grew up in the slum, he could tell us a lot about it. We saw many things, went trough different areas and ended the tour in a family house where the woman cooked the most delicious Indian dish we’ve had so far. Thank you!
