The building has an enormous heritage value and the collection too is interesting. The location should get more footfall if more interactive and participatory events could be created. The lawns too have interesting displays and the tiny retail shop has some nice crafts from Eastern India. Requires some more vitality

I didn`t have much time to visit both the floors, however my visit to the ground floor was rewarding. Grand collection of masks i. e. mukhavata ( मुखवटा or ಮುಖವಟಾ ) used in the folk dances all across India from North to South and East to West, representing various cultures prevalent in India. I have no artistic aptitude, even then I spent almost an hour here. This place is within 5 min walking distance from KSRTC ( Bangalore ) stand and 15 min walking distance from Mysore Junction

I have always enjoyed visiting this museum. May I make a few suggestions. The shop houses interesting artefacts . But the shop takes only cash . A Gpay or card facility should be made available .A museum needs to move with changing times .

Indira Gandhi Manav Sangrahalaya is a Museum serving as an important attraction to tourists visiting Mysore. It is of historical importance, as one of the National Museums of India. The head quarter of museum is in Bhopal. The prime objective of this museum is to protect and showcase the art and culture of traditional India with a view to educate the present and future generation about the rich heritage left behind by our ancestors.
There are many exhibits consisting of handicrafts of different periods as well as of present day. The works of embroideries of Gujarat and the terracotta sculptures of Rajasthan are attractive items to be seen here. Several exhibitions and workshops of traditional arts and competitions are organised with a view to foster new and young talents and to encourage them. It is curious to know that Rangoli Competition has achieved significant popularity.
Those who have an inclination to imbibe the rural arts and crafts of our country can learn those arts and get mastery over the subject in this institution.
The National Museum of Anthropology is situated in Bhopal in India. I have visited both these institutions. Their aims and objects are to present an integrated story of evolution of man and culture with special reference to our country.
The southern regional centre of IGRMS is located in Mysore. Here short-term training courses are conducted on conventional art of diverse forms. Visitors can witness theatrical performances, dance and music, tribal and folk tradition programs. Talented artists will have an opportunity to exhibit their aptitude on the platform provided by the centre. Those interested can learn the art of traditional Mysore painting. It offers two-week workshops in traditional art forms that are open to public.
It celebrates ‘International Day of the World's Indigenous People’ every year, in a unique manner by inviting tribal artistes from various parts of India to display their creative and performing art traditions during a week-long show. The artifacts created by the tribal people from various States during a workshop called Anantha Yatre are on display. They include bamboo and wooden artwork, embroidery and paintings. ‘Medara’ community persons in Karnataka are specialised in bamboo crafts as it is their profession. Their artists do represent the State at National event with their creations.
Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya is housed in the building called Wellington House. It is the oldest secular structure of 200 years. It was first occupied by Duke of Wellington, as political-in-charge of Mysore, during 1799-1801, after fall of Tippu Sultan, the Tiger of Mysore. The speciality of this structure is that burnt brick in lime mortar is used in its construction on sital area of 1,13,365 sft, having compound of 120 meters in length and 88 meters in breadth. It is two-storied special structure, from where we can view from all the four sides. It is a State protected Monument found in the heart of Mysore city, on Irwin Road.
Henry Irwin was the architect who constructed the beautiful and world famous Mysore Palace in 1912. He is remembered by naming a road as Irwin Road that connects Railway station with KSRTC Bus Stand in Mysore.
It is a feast to admire the beauty of bicentury old structure and various collections of exhibits in this museum. When you are in Mysore make it a point to visit and enjoy and educate yourselves in this historical and heritage center.
It is open on Tuesday to Saturday from 10 am to 5.30 pm. There is no entry fee. Address: Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya, Wellington House, Irwin Road, Lashkar Mohalla, Mysore, Karnataka 570001 contact +91 821 2448231.

Absolutely superb collection of folk instruments - and open to all without any discriminatory / xenophobic pricing scheme charging foreigners unjust entry prices. A winner - should be seen by all!

A visit is worth it if you have some free time, I went slowly and was done in half an hour. Downstairs are rotating displays, I was there for 'Nomads of India', it was well done. There were a lot of photographs and genuine clothing and various items used in daily life, I felt it was interesting. Upstairs was paintings by different artists in different rooms.

Never spotted this little folklore museum tucked in a govt building before...until this time. So as always, enthusiasm for art collection at peak, checked out the range. Decent collection, not much to brag about and not much facilities either. If the authorities pay attention, this can be a start attraction.
