A peek into the Indian Army
Jun 2023
The Army Heritage Museum in Annadale sits below the main Shimla town, in a very picturesque setting: a golf course stretches on one side, and the mountains all round are thickly clad with deodar woods. It’s very green and beautiful, and the carefully maintained gardens of the entire complex are a pleasure to visit. The Army Heritage Museum spreads over several levels. On the lower level, a hall contains the colours of different military regiments of the Indian Army, along with details of the major battles fought by the Army. On the upper level, which is the main building of the museum, a series of connected rooms, all fairly small, examine different aspects of Indian military. Ancient Indian military ethos, great commanders, military facts from across ancient, medieval and colonial India are covered here, as are uniforms, military music and bands, military honours and awards, weapon displays, the Army’s role in sports and adventure, and interesting insights into the history of the Indian Army, such as old photos of the Indian Military Academy (IMA) and its distinguished graduates. Above the museum building is a well-maintained and rather nice cactus house. Behind the main museum building is a souvenir shop and a cafeteria which sells basic snacks, such as patties, doughnuts and samosas, along with instant (Maggi) noodles, packaged soft drinks, tea, and coffee. Entry to the museum is free and photography is allowed. In the summer (April to October) timings are 10 to 2 and 3 to 5 on all days except Monday and gazetted holidays. Winter timings, on the same days of the week, are 10 to 2 and 3 to 4.

The grounds were beautifully kept and green, with a small snack stall at the back. The army museum was interesting for the kids but the real highlight was the stunning greenhouse that is home to a large variety of cacti. We spent a pleasant afternoon enjoying the view as golfers played on the Annandale (tourists are not allowed) and drinking milkshakes from the stall. Do remember that a valid government ID proof is required to prove your nationality as an Indian to enter.

A hidden place in mountains and forest. I thanked 3 times to my taxi driver who took me to such a place.

Not really my interest but for someone who is interested in army history this is the place to go. Lovely grounds and great views. Bring your passport because the guards will ask to see identification.

Looking like it might have been in Canada, this compact museum about Indian Army matters is well worth a visit if you can fit it in. It is in a bowl at the foot of Shimla and very well looked after. Bring your passport (or a copy) as it may be required - this is an army site.
