We've often been to the State Emporia on Baba Kharak Singh Marg but we normally start at the Connaught end and this time started from the far end (coming from Shivaji stadium direction). Consequently we dipped in and out of the state shops of lots of places we'd not visited before. You really can learn a lot about the different states just by wandering around the stores. Some are more keen to push their products than others, but there's an amazing range of goodies on offer at fixed (or nearly fixed) prices. Many take credit cards. We bought a silk shawl in one, another in another, some great cushion covers and a wall hanging, some soaps and all sorts of different things. Considering it was 44C outside, our approach of popping from on air con emporium to the next worked just perfectly.
Some are quite classy and well laid out, others a bit dark and dusty but I doubt anybody can walk the whole set without being tempted by something.
Sadly the Rajastan store no longer has a cafe in the basement - a shame as we were gasping for a cold drink by the time we got there.

Experience the handicrafts of India at Delhi by just visiting the line of State Emporium shops on Baba Kharak Singh Marg near Connaught Place.
This line of shops situated opposite the Hanuman Mandir are a must visit for handicrafts from all over India.
Some of the more famous shops are the Cauvery Handicrafts or Karnataka State Emporium for sandalwood handicrafts, wood inlay paintings, scented sachets and sandalwood agarbathis.
The Kairali or Kerala Emporium has beautiful artwork in coconut shells and coconut products.
Gurjari or Gujarat State Emporium is known for its colourful dolls and puppets.
All the State emporia showcase sarees in silk, cotton and other materials in designs that are exclusive to their state. Emporia from the North-Eastern States have beautiful shawls and other materials in traditional weaves and colours.
Any visitor to Delhi should visit these Emporia for gifts and keepsakes.
A visit to Delhi, especially for visitors from overseas is incomplete without visiting these Emporia.
Most emporia have perennial discounts and all prices are fixed prices. The rates are very competitive as the State Governments are more interested in showcasing their products rather than making profits.

A unique street mall, with State emporia from different parts of India along a 4 block shopping strip.
these are speciality stores, selling clothing, art, handicraft, furniture, jewellery and more from most of India's states.
It was wonderful to see the sheer variety of goods and the differences in style from state to state.
Stand-out ones: Gurjari- from Gujrat- great street wear, their skirts and blouses were good bargains
Rajasthali: From Rajasthan- great souvenirs and bangles and funky bags
Moha: from tribal areas- some very nice brass and metal work, slightly higher price
Poompuhar: From Tamil Nadu: got some good gold leaf art work and beads for jewellery making.
Kashmir emporium had some great metal art work and paintings as well.
Some of the emporiums were pricey, staff not too receptive.
Khadi emporium, had totally disinterested staff, who did not deign to show us anything,
Maharashtra emporium was crowded and had very slow staff.
But there were plenty of bargains to be had, no bargaining though, they are all Government subsidised so fixed price and quality is good.
Good place to pick up some good quality art work for the home or as gifts.
A couple of good restaurants are there to grab a bite, as always not too many public toilets around.
Not too far from the Metro station and you can always get the "auto"
Best part, it is not crowded, so low risk of pick-pockets.
An old temple is across the road.
We spent a good 3-4 hours shopping and came away with plenty of items, cards are accepted in all the stores, which was a bonus!

Most tourists know about the Central Cottage Industries Emporium but fewer are aware of the State Emporia Complex on Baba Kharak Singh Marg, not far from Connaught Place. Each of the stores represents a different state or region of India and they really are all very different. Some are rather scruffy, others quite fancy and upmarket. Some have staff who follow you round attentively, others let you browse without interruption.
People will tell you that the prices are 'fixed' and in some of the stores that's true but others are a little more flexible and will offer discounts of various types but not a good hard haggle.
Some have nice little cafe areas where you can stop and have a drink and a snack whilst you're shopping.
Personally I still prefer the CCIE, but the State Emporia are an interesting alternative and offer a wide range of good quality handicrafts, many of types you won't find so easily elsewhere in the city.

The State emporium complex is definitely a great choice if you want to buy handicraft items without hassle and having to bargain. In these shops, you'll find a large selection of authentic items from various Indian states and the staff won't pressure you into buying. The prices may be higher than what you can get in bazaars, but at least here you're sure it's authentic and not cheap imitations.

The state emporia is a long line of buildings which house the government owned shops which sell locally produced items. The prices you find here are quite reasonable, but do compare prices from store to store. While the initial prices you will receive are not absurdly inflated like you will find in privately owned stores there will still be room to bargain in most instances. Be very cautious as you approach the emporium from the CP as it is likely you will be approached by strangers trying to point you towards privately owned shops. Today on our visit a man came up to us as we were trying to find our way over to the complex and informed us that all the shops were closed because of a holiday and that we should follow him to another state emporia. Of course we ignored him and found all the shops open. Everything opens around 10:30 a.m. and closes for lunch for an hour around 12:30 and then stay open until late.

This is a great place to do all your shopping in Delhi. I like the Punjabi State emporium, they are cheap and good quality and the Bihar State emporium. You will pay very reasonable prices and you won't get ripped off. Steer clear of the Kashmiri emporium their prices are so high and you will get ripped off big time. Punjab state shop you can buy lovely small tables and embroidered cloths. Bihar state for paper mache goods.

A good range of good quality products at fair prices with helpful staff and no bargaining. You might find a better price; you might find better quality, but I doubt you'll find a better combination of the two.

Nice Indian handicrafts shops in ugly building with a confusing layout. Benefits:
- No haggling, fixed prices
- Known quality, no scams with polyester sold as silk etc.
- No vendors yelling at you.
Even better is the nearby Central Cottage Industries Emporium across from The Imperial hotel.
