Dhoomimal art gallery was established in 1936 to claim to be one of the India`s & Delhi`s oldest art galleries. It is situated in Connaught place next to the Rajeev Chowk metro station while their new & India`s biggest art complex came up in 1963 at G-2 Connaught circus called the International Art Center.
The older art gallery has been promoting specially India`s modernist impressionism movement & contemporary art thus become a hub & a meeting place for the capital`s artist where i could go often meet & discuss their art.Over the years i have been to their regular exhibitions of eminent artists like MF Hussain,Swaminathan,Gade,Jamini Roy,Sailoz Mukherjee,Anjolie Menon & Krishen Khanna etc.The highlight is their pioneering support to budding artists like Hemraj,Sannath Singh & Satya Sai etc who became much bigger names later on.
Their newly set up International Art Center developed in to an art museum & cultural center for India`s art lovers. It also has works of sculpture making it one of the biggest art complex in India.
I recently visited the gallery to watch their favorite artists FN Souza whose exhibitions i had also watched three times earlier staged at various intervals of time from 1976 on wards.Souza was pre-occupied with the female form specially women with well filled voluptous breasts with the Khajurah Temple women being his models in mind.I came back from the exhibition once again impressed with Souza`s understanding of the sexuality, mystery, eroticism & beauty of women! The artist described his paintings as "My drawing & paintings are made of little structure : two parallel lines cross-hatched on either side".An art gallery worth the visit for any art lover.
