Do not book with Salamat- He is more interested in squeezing tourists for shopping commissions than providing honest, quality service.
After looking at reviews from many companies, we ultimately chose Salamat's company, Saniya Tours. My wife and I booked a day tour from Delhi to Agra for 9800 rupees ($159). We had 2 questions: Could we get a tour with Salamat himself and could we make sure there was no shopping. Salamat confirmed. We exchanged many emails. I even emailed him the night before to request no shopping and he responded "I always try to make sure that my tourist doesn't have to face any sort of problem..."
The taxi picked us up in the morning. When we arrived in Agra, we met with our tour guide- Not Salamat but his friend. Though we were disappointed, the new guide was licensed and seemed knowledgable. So far so good.
We toured the Taj Mahal, but most of the tour was focused on the marble inlay handcraft- a lead up to our shopping trip later that afternoon! During the tour he continued hyping up this UNESCO co-op where they preserve the ancient craft of marble inlay. We saw this as code for shopping. We declined requests to go and instead went to the Agra Fort. After touring the Agra Fort, he asked again to go. We once again declined, saying we were hungry and then asked to go to lunch and stick to the prearranged schedule.
After lunch, he asked again to take us to a UNESCO co-op. He insisted that if we did not go, we would not understand the Taj Majal. He assured us that this wasn't a shopping visit- this was a UNESCO site to preserve the craft. The building was subsidized by UNESCO and the Indian Government to show foreigners how the marble inlay is made, not to make a profit.
What a scam! After a 20 minute demonstration of the marble inlay craft, we were taken to another room, served tea, and handled by many employees. After insisting we didn't want anything, we were continually pressured to buy at least something. From their perspective, we had received a 20 minute demonstration, drank their tea, and taken up their time. We bought the cheapest thing (1800 rupees) and left.
We told the guide that we were very frustrated because we felt tricked. This was clearly an orchestrated shopping trip for commission. After sharing our frustration, the guide asked us to visit his family's textile shop. We couldn't believe it!
I'm most frustrated with Salamat. I repeatedly requested no shopping. Unfortunately, instead of operating an honest business, it seems that he is greedy for commissions.
I feel bad writing a negative review and I know it will hurt Salamat's business. That said, there are other honest tour guide companies (that aren't greedy for commissions) that will hopefully get more business instead. Book with them!
