My wife and I had purchased two tablecloths for $400 U.S. ($200 cash and $200 on a credit card) from CIE (Cottage Industries Exposition) in Mumbai. Upon returning to our cruise ship, a 15-minute walk from the terminal, we discovered that one of the two carpets needed repair. We immediately returned to the shop. It was agreed that the repairs would be done overnight and we could return the next day to pick up the tablecloths.

When we picked up the tablecloths the next day my wife elected to exchange the undamaged tablecloth. There was no price tag on the replacement tablecloth. We were told that it was more expensive. I then offered the employee $40 cash which was accepted.

Upon return to our cruise ship, we discovered damage on the replacement tablecloth which we had not noticed in the shop. There was no chance to get back to the shop this time. I feel cheated by CIE.

They knew, or ought to have known, that we would not accept another damaged carpet had we known about the damage. I expected that this was the reason that there was no price tag on the tablecloth. A more observant and less pressured shopper would have noticed the damage.

Avoid shopping at CIE (Cottage Industries Exposition) shops or take the risk of experiencing the negative consequences we have.

Over a light lunch we were shown how the hand-knotted cashmere carpets were made. We were shown several beautiful carpets and decided to buy one. It was expensive but came with shipping included. We are awaiting delivery.

I bought a carpet from CIE. It’s such beautiful piece of art, which is decorated by jewels stones. The carpet gives royal look of my living room.
The price is valuable for carpet. The shop staffs very discipline and helpful. In this shop more carpet which i like so much but I will buy next time.

This was a stop on our tour and we very much enjoyed learning the history of how their rugs are made, while sipping come complementary tea.

After getting a demonstration of their weaving and knot tying techniques, they start to roll out about a dozen or so rugs of course with the intent that you purchase something.

If you know your rugs you can certainly get a very good deal, but if you don't you can still negotiate something lower than their initial price.

They have many sizes and colors and ship anywhere in the world. If you purchase something small, they wrap it very tightly so that it fits in a carry-on bag.

Our group was offered Beer and Tea and Samosas which was all very nice. We were given a demonstration of numerous Cashmerr Carpets and how they are made.
When we were in Turkey we regretted not buying there so we decided to buy here. The Starting price was very expensive but with a little bargaining came down to an Expensive but acceptable price.

There were a few holdups in India And Australian Customs but UPS showed Tracking all the way.
The Carpet is now down and it feels amazing on the feet and looks just as good. Happy with our purchase.

This was a surprise visit, not part of our itinerary, but here we were enjoying a light lunch and fastidious attention from the many male attendants present. After lunch we were treated to a display of lovely Kashmiri carpets and told how the cottage industry in Kashmir survived using traditional methods of spinning, dyeing, and carpet making with the double knot. This was all very impressive and a number of our tour group invested in some of the carpets. Although we were repeatedly told that the cottage industry in Kashmir is Government sponsored and products sold though outlets like this, at no time were we told that Cottage Industries Group, the parent company, is, in fact, a multinational company. It seems that the business dates back over 40 years and involved in selling silk carpets before the present structure of an export trading house was formalized in 1978. Whatever the true story, it is a popular place with tour buses.
