Visited in last October. One of the ancient Raja maha Vihara's in the reigion which belonged to the Magam pattuwa kingdom, Very colourful history. Must climb to the top before noon otherwise it is very hot once the rock gets heated up.

Mulgirigala is a must visit when you are in the region. Still not a very touristic place. Nice walk up to the temple. Many big trees, birds, flowers and with some luck you will see colourful agamids.

Try to go early when it's not to humid as the climb is tough going. But it is well worth visiting with amazing colours within the caves. Local guides are waiting to pounce at 1000rupees our guide was worth the money though.

One has to be fit to climb up to the Caves..but the Cave in which thehuge Buddha statue is housed is within the reach of the average traveller. Details could be read on Google.

Nice place off the standard tourist track. It was empty and just for us, which was a great experience. Tour guide takes 1000 LKR, another funny guy takes 200 LKR for flowers "we should give to Buddha". The view from the top, the caves - everything really nice.

We have visited under Rain. No tourists. Really nice, spectacular. But be careful stairs are really slippy with Rain.

After having visited the temple I can imagine how impressive it could look like if it was renovated and cleaned a bit. The current look is quite wornout and it was sad to see such an important temple in this situation. I still recommend to visit. The locals really wait forward to tourists to come and it provides them some... More

A monastic temple carved out of a rock outcrop comprised of four terraced levels. There are several rock temples with Buddha statues and wall and ceiling murals. Some date from 2C BC while others are more modern. It's a bit of a climb up with some challenging rock carved stairs to be careful on but pleasant as you can rest... More

Nice spot. It's ramshackle version of dambulla, with excellent Buddha caves, a little off the beaten track. I normally like steps, but these were the wonkiest I've come across so far in SL. Safe but the unevenness breaks your rhythm and stride. There is a fork just below the top level with some steps hewn into the rockface, the alternative... More

We did this as a morning trip from Tangalle. It was really interesting and we got there relatively early and there were very few western tourists. There are quite a few steps between each of the cave temples but its not too arduous and the view at the very top is superb....great swathes of coconut palms all around. The cave... More
