This is ample proof that hinduism has prevailed in this place from time immemorial. The temple of Lord Shiva is neglected by the authorities , may be on purpose to erase the true history

As you go around Polonnaruwa and enjoy the Buddhist themes of the place and its monuments, the Shiva temple (which highlights the Hindu influence on the place) adds to the lure.

It is the first of the two Siva Devalayas or temples, located in the polonnaruwa Archaeological ruins. Devalaya (No 1) is a small structure, which is in ruins with an effort having been made at restoration. There are indications that original temple must have been dedicated to Hindu deity Siva, however, currently it is not in use as a temple. The structure does not have a roof and there are very few sculptures or other examples of ancient art.

This temple has been reconstructed and you can still see the stone numbers on the faces of the blocks. Built in the 13th century it was a sort of “poke in the eye” to the Buddhists after the collapse of the Sinhalese power. There are the remains of two statues at the door and inside is a small male/ female sculpture. There is some decoration on the outside. The building was reportedly built without mortar and and I must admit that the modern reconstruction ( also without mortar) is in my opinion very badly done.

The temple is the first building seen in the historic park. Supposedly dedicated to the Hindu god Siva, the uniqueness o this building being that it is made o stone blocks rather than red bricks as seen everywhere else in the park.

The first temple when entering the big Polonnaruwa site.
They still use the temple as a Boeddhist temple.

One of two small but well preserved temples dedicated to shiva. In the northern part of the site. Spoilt for me by ignorant tourists (Dutch who I like but were shaming their nation) parading in with shoes on as the ground was hot. Their excuse was their guide said it was ok but I think the huge and ubiquitous signs telling you to remove shoes and hats should be obeyed.
