Another breathtaking structure built by King Parakramabahu I with massive standing Buddha statue more than 14 meter height. Murals can be seen at the structure and there were some scaffolding for restoration works. Worth to check out this masterpiece from the ancient world for 30-45mins. There are few massive stupas in the vicinity of this site that worth to check it out too.

The name of this image house translates to ‘the ornament of Lanka’. It is 55’/16m high. It is another structure built by Parakramabahu I. Only the torso of the formerly 41’/13m standing Buddha has survived. The reddish orange colour of the bricks catches your eye. Its interior reminds you a bit of a Western European cathedral.

This is one of the stops for Polonnaruwa historical sight tour and the pictures of this place defines the ancient town of Polonnaruwa, making it the most touristic place from the sights that you can see at the ancient town. The place consists of one main building ruin that you can freely walk through.
The tickets needs to be purchased at the ticket office of Archeological museum in Polonnaruwa.

The Lankathilaka Image House was built in the second half of the 12th century, during the reign of King Parakramabahu, to host a 41 feet tall brick statue of Buddha which, nowadays, is headless and armless. There are also the remains two massive brick pillars at the entrance, still more than 50 feet in height, some nicely carved stone stairways, some wall remains and ..not much else.. - still worth a quick stop.

To my mind, this is one of the key places to visit in the whole Polonnaruwa complex, which is worth a visit in its entirety anyway - you cannot fail but be impressed by the massive brick upright statue of Buddha.

This is probably the best. It is really incredible to see the things ancient Sinhalese have done in the past. This proves that, their civilization in not surpassed by any other civilizations in the world. They have produced different shapes of bricks to shape up the huge pillars of the building. We still can see about 55ft height of the ruins of this building, built by king Parakramabahu 1153-1186 AD.

this ruined building also a similar place like thivanka image house. This is a another construction by greater king maha parakramabahu. A big standing buddha statue about 42 feet in height. But the head is missing because of Chola invasion. chronicles saying this building also decorated by beautiful paintings and this was a 5 storey building. still can see the steps to the upper flows of the building. when leaving the shrine the devotees can leave without turning their back to the Buddha statue. It is a convention maintained by Buddhist devotees.

don't miss this place

Carved from a single large block of stone during the period of King Parakramabahu. The Buddha statue is made out of clay bricks and has been over 41 ft in height. A human being standing next to it looks tiny compared to the size of the statue! The entrance to the image house has two enormous pillars made from bricks. The tallest one being 58 feet in height. It is thought that they were much taller prior to destruction and the building was made up of 5 stories. The steps to the upper floors are still visible.
