Sri Dalada Maligawa (Sinhala: ශ්‍රී දළදා මාළිගාව) or The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a Buddhist temple in the city of Kandy, Sri Lanka. It is located in the royal palace complex which houses the Relic of the tooth of Buddha. Since ancient times, the relic has played an important role in local politics because it is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country. Kandy was the last capital of the Sinhalese kings and is a UNESCO world heritage site partly due to the temple.

The temple which houses the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha is one of the holiest shrines in the entire Buddhist world.

This is still a temple and at the same time a historical building. It is beautiful, an impressive piece of architecture. Very delicately and beautifully put together, great example of workmanship in history. Since it is a historic site, a lot of history is present too. Well worth a visit.

The temple is very well maintained considering the history. Please don't miss the museums in and next to it, they are very interesting and informative.

A must see in Kandy, you can get a real feel for local traditions here. The temple is a multifaceted complex including a 700 hundred year old building. The main chamber of the tooth is beautiful but you don't get to see the actual tooth relic, or at least we didn't. Our guide gave us Lotus flowers to present to... More

The inside of the temple is really lovely, and you get the whole history of it in beautiful paintings. It's pleasant to just walk around and have a look.

It is beautifully preserved temple with a history. Legend has it that whoever holds the tooth relic of Buddha will rule over Srilanka. The last Royal to rule Sri Lanka was brought here as a prisoner by the British and was made to sign the surrender documents in the presence of the head Monk. This was to sanctify the British... The temple of the tooth was a nice experience, but far less impressive than many other places in Sri Lanka.

This is one, if not The, attraction in Kandy. The Temple is huge. There is a small fee for foreign visitors. No shoes are allowed in the main temple. And out of respect no shorts or sleeveless tops. There is a counter where you can leave your shoes. Be prepared for a HUGE crowd in the main building where Buddha's... More

The current temple used to be an ancient palace that preserved the tooth. After independence, the palace has been converted to preserve the tooth relic. The money they charge for you to get inside is very expensive for something that you don't feel is so profound. You can't see the relic at all times anyway. There are special viewing hours.... More
