Sunset simply not to be missed
A must do. Seeing the sun go down over the city will be my most lasting memory of my trip to Kosovo. The route to the hill top starts by the Sinai Pasha Mosque. Then signs with arrows keep you on track. For those of us getting on a bit, the climb is easily do-able with a few rests. The fortress is largely ruined, with the information panels hard to read due to damage. At the rear of the fort the view over the valley and distant mountains is impressive. But it’s the stunning view over Prizren, and the wailing from the two dozen minarets down below at sunset, that you’ll take away with you.

    The Prizren Fortress
The Prizren Fortress is a remarkable place! It is a historical castle located in the city of Prizren in Kosovo. It is one of the most well-known attractions in the city and offers stunning views of the city and the surrounding region. The fortress has a long history and is an important cultural and tourist site. Inside the castle, you can visit the historical museum and enjoy beautiful views from the tall towers. It's a wonderful place to explore history and appreciate the beautiful sights of the city.

    Go for it!
I climbed the steep hill to the top while my friend waited below in a cafe. There is good signage pointing the way from the old town. The uneven cobble and pebbles/stones is slippery even in dry conditions so I don't suggest attempting it in the rain. It is a good workout to reach the top but well worth it. There are several ruins to explore and the views are spectacular. You can see the entire city of Prizren and surrounds from one side of the castle and the mountains from the backside. Literature is in English and diagrams show places to look for in the town. There were very few people up here when I visited on a beautiful afternoon in Mid May. Toilets at the top was a pleasant surprise. Wear sturdy shoes, sunscreen, a hat and bring water.

    Great view of the city
The fortress of Prizren, they call it Kalaja, is a medieval castle in Prizren, Kosovo. It was built on a hill above the city, under which Prizren gradually developed into a large city. No tickets, not really easy trail, but a 30-40 minutes hiking the stairs through old houses, leads you to the top of the fortress. Be prepared for a good walk, a strong sun if in summer and finally a great view of the city from the top.

Eagle view of the city from old Kalaja fortress, a top monument in the city
If you want to enjoy the view of Sharr mountains, surrounding area of the city or the city by itself, this is one of the top locations. Also, the fortress bears a much longer history than just the Ottoman one from Eyalet of Rumelia. It comes back to Serbs, Byzantines or Dardanians.

Our hotel was part way up the hill to the fortress so we decided to check it out on our first morning in Prizren. The walk up is fairly steep in places but is on roads / tarmac and there is unlikely to be any traffic so just take your time.

We were here in September 2019 and as MikeLondonSE13, who was here around the same time, and others have said, there is definitely a litter problem around and in the fortress.

Once you make it to the fortress, there are some information boards but not really much else. Just wander around the enjoy the views.

An ancient castle. We loved it. You can see all the city from it. You can see the river that divide the city in 2 parts and all the bridges and mosques. The guide explained all the history of this castle which is really worth to hear. The entry was free of charge.

A very nice place and a must do when in Prizren. In my opinion, they can improve the experience for tourists by adding more info boards along the terrain. I feel like I do not know exactly what it was and what it represents. The climb is quite steep but it is worth it, it is not complicated if done taking breaks and drinking water, total time to get there is maybe 15-20 min. It is free entrance and at the top there is a small shop selling beverages.

Interesting place with a view all over the city and the mountains. It is under construction, unfortunately there was no museum and the information panels weren´t that great. The place was unkempt with garbage laying around. It shows that the country is still in disterss and lacking funds for takeing care of clutural heritage. It was definitely worth the visit thoug!

On a fine day, not to be missed. A nice walk uphill with great views of the plain and the city. Take your time, come early morning and late afternoon. It is open 24/7 and no charge at the entrance. Good weather is a must.

You can walk here from the center of Prizren about 15min. The walk can be challenging so wear good shoes! The fortress itself is kept clean and it offers a wonderful view of Prizren. The tunnels and some rooms are open to check out. I would suggest about 1h for the whole thing. There are toilets aswell.

Prizren Castle is an old fortress situated the old part of the city of Prizren. The fortress dates since the Roman years and lived until 1915, when it was destroyed during the First World War. It was built to protect Prizren from foreign attacks and consists of a great number of underground tunnels. Due to its long and interesting history, as well as the amazing view of the city, its ruins attract a great number of visitors nowadays.

Best view of the city!
Reaching is not easy at all、and it is not easy to find the correct way.
The view is worth the fatigue as gives you full city landscape.
Free water fountains should be available.
