When you are Podgorica, I recommend stopping for some quick pictures of the King Nikola statue, who was the last king of Montenegro. The statue is across from the parliament building in the upper part of the park. There are actually several tourist spots in the area. Behind the statue are steps that lead to the Ribnica Bridge, which is one of the oldest surviving structures in the city. If you cross the bridge, you will find the ruins of a fort.

Like so many European capitals Podgorica also has a monument of a king with a sword on a stallion. The name of the man on the horse in this case is Nikola Petrović from a family of bishops who declared themselves princes and eventually king.
From a European perspective the role of Nikola Petrović was quite progressive as he took a hard stand against the Ottoman Sultans and introduced modern reforms such as press freedom and law. Later he allied himself with the Entente during WOI against the Austrian Habsburg monarchy and Germany. After the war ended he did not return to Montenegro and died in exile in France. Nikola identified as Serb.

This is a fairly standard heroic equestrian monument in a park area across the street form the Montenegrin government buildings (parliament, bank, etc.) in the heart of Podgorica. It is worth a quick look when in the area and it is next to those buildings plus other landmarks - the Blazo Jovanovic Bridge, Stari Most, Skaline fortress, and Hotel Podgorica, Trg Vojvode Bećira Osmanagića (the plaza at the heart of the old Ottoman part of town), etc. This makes all of these an easy walk to see, including this monument.

Definitely one of the prettiest monument/statue of Podgorica. The design is beautiful, and very nicely depicting this local hero.

A great place to escape the relentless heat of summer in Podgorica, and the statue itself makes for some great photos from the right angles. Also very close to everything in the centre and the river.
