This art museum is the treasur of an idea of two providential people: the painter Hollosi Simon who had the idea of setting up a summer painting school and the mayor of Baia Mare at that time Thurman which, together with the local concil they decided, on May 5th, 1896, to finance a painters' colony.
Over the time the painting school of Baia Mare has been the house of some important art celebrities from Romania and Hungary, and also from entire Europe. The museum owns exceptional valuble paintings belonging to all those who have passed here in 120 years. With the museum guide you can find the story of each painting and the destiny of its artist. For example the two Jewish Hungarian painters: Mund Hugo and Jandi David, side by side in the galery, first one emigrated and saved himself but the second one stayed behind and died in Holocaust.
The symbols of each painting could be find in the characters of the museum collections, as in the extraordinary triptych of Tibor Boromisza, in wich the Adoration of the Magicians took place in Baia Mare, and the figure of Jesus is a self portrait.

I was not familiar with the Nagybanya (Baia Mare) school of art, so this art museum was a complete surprise. Despite not containing any work by "household names" (outside of Romania at least), the display of impressionist art would not be out of place in the Musee d'Orsay.

I am surprised this is not ranked as the number 1 attraction in Baia Mare, which I suspect is because tourists simply view it as "just another small regional art gallery" and skip it for the more typical sights.

Be under no illusion, if you miss this exhibition you are cheating yourself. This is the one of the highlight's of Maramures, let alone Baia Mare.

The Nagybanya (Baia Mare) school of art is famous among lovers of impressionism. Inspired by the French impressionists, this Hungarian school flourished in the late 1800s, and early 1900s, and even carried on through the Communist era. The museum has a wonderful collection from this period that captures more than a century of life and history.

A chance to get acquainted with the Nagybánya School, active here at the start of the 20C under the aegis of Hungarian Simon Hollósy, a reaction against the academic art of the Munich School. Discover artists like János Thorma, Tibor Boromisza, Jeno Maticska and Valér Ferenczy who were inspired by French Impressionism and the new pictorial trends of the time. Interesting collection of icons: note those by 18C painter Radu Munteanu, who worked in the wood churches of the Apuseni and Maramureş.
