Ancient burial site for Huari and Nazca civilizations in the desert about an hours drive out of downtown Nazca. Very big area with well-preserved bodies in fetal positions looking eastwards towards the rising sun. Beautiful mountain backdrops also. Site tells you a lot about how these civilizations thought about the world. You really need a guide to get there as its in the middle of the desert, and also to explain what you are looking at.

Cementerio (o Necrópolis) Chachilla is a Nasca cemetery in the middle of the desert, close to Nasca. To get there, you need to take a tour or a taxi.
It's impressive. It's a pre-columbine cemetery, with open tombs and mummies accessible for you to see. You can explore it on your own and just read the (few) available information.
I have the feeling that this will be regulated quite soon, and it won't be as easily accessible.

Wow. Just wow. This is one of those serendipitous moments when you have discovered something that you weren’t expecting. A few kms out of Nazca and a left turn down a very dodgy looking track we were soon at the site where hundreds of bodies were discovered buried in graves.

Some people found it creepy but frankly, I found it fascinating. People were buried in a foetal position with pottery, food and other treasures, wrapped in blankets and you can still see their long dreadlock hair braids.

There is a small display room that has two things to see which are worthwhile. It is free to enter. There are toilets which are clean. You can buy a few snacks here and if you want your drinks cold just ask as there are some in a small esky.
Wheelchair friendly. Kid friendly.

After reading what to do in Nazca I decided to stay for 2 days and have to say that the this trip I felt was really a waste of time, I have seen so many interesting sites in Peru and this was not one of them. It could take 5 mins to get round but as the guide stopped and spoke in both english and spanish it took a bit longer. The graves were all the same really so after the first grave you were seeing the same thing. Really would not recommend as a place to see.

This site is highly underrated in my opinion. As many people, we only went to Nazca to take a flight over the lines. However, as we had a few more hours until our bus, we looked for other things to do in Nazca. We did not expect much but found the cemetery (and the Cantalloc Aqueducts, which are usually done together in tours) fascinating and were surprised to be almost the only tourists there, in high season. A similar site in Europe would probably be filled with tourists.

The cemetery itself takes less than an hour to visit but is a bit far away from the Nazca city center by car, and requires to go through a long gravel road. It is recommended to take a tour as there won't be any taxi there to bring you back. It takes less than an hour to visit, but count another one hour and a half of car to go there and come back to Nazca (if this is too long for your schedule, the aqueduct is probably a better choice as it is much closer and a bit more unique).

The airline arranged our tour with a local guide, but it is really easy to find a guide in Nazca. They initially asked for 80 soles per person for a 3-4 hours tour for four persons (incl. the Aqueduct, the cemetery and a few other sights on the way) but we negotiated the price down to 50 soles per person. The tours usually don't include the entry tickets of the Aqueduct (10 soles per person) and of the cemetery (8 soles per person) that you can buy at the entrance.

A very beautiful and interesting journey through the sand,
the mountains around were very colorful, the place seemed very sad since it seemed that the graves and skeletons were not protected from looting,

We went with a tour guide arranged via AeroNasca, who was quite knowledgeable. Interesting to see mummies in situ and learn more about burial rituals.

Paid USD40 for the tour. It’s totally not worth it!
花了40美元,開車過去40分鐘,只待了20分鐘,除了屍體真的其他都不是,一點也不值得,千萬不要去,浪費錢浪費時間!

It's an interesting (and sad) place to see the mummies but go with a guide, otherwise, you'll miss a lot! After asking around for prices that varied between 25 to 40 dollars per person at agencies on Calle Lima we were approached by a taxi driver who also claimed to be a guide and offered to take us there for total 60 soles (including entrance tickets). In the beginning we were a bit skeptic but this was the best choice we've made. He told us a lot about Nazca, Chauchilla, history and mummies. And while we were in the cemetery, another driver approached him asking if his clients could join our tour. We also learnt that he works with some of the agencies but he gets just a bit from what those agencies charge tourists. And although he spoke only Spanish, he did it slowly and used gestures to illustrate what we didn't understand. So if you have a chance, support locals directly.

We went to Chauchilla on the second day of our visit in Nazca, just before our bus trip back to Lima. The place is about half an hour - hour drive from the city and most of this drive is going through the middle of nowhere, Mars-like places.

The cemetery is in the middle of the desert. If you just stand there looking around, you feel like being on the Mars. There is no life there at all, no trees, no plants, no animals, not even grass. Totally dead and dry - that's why the bodies were preserved in such a good shape. I've never seen anything like this before.

To see the burial places and the mummies you have to follow a footpath that was reclaimed from the dusty desert. All the area is covered by human remains, white bones and bone parts everywhere. Basically if you see something white in the sand - there is at least one in every inch - you can be sure it is a piece of bone.

The bodies were burried in a special sitting position and some of them are preserved really well. Families, adults, kids, elderly in family graves, it is very touching.

If you have time to visit the place, do so, it well worth the money and time.
