I would rank this one of the worst places for traveling in the whole country Peru. Loads of tourist, there was even a traffic jam on the way from Ica.(look on my picture)
You could take a boat on the tiny lagoon which doesn't make it look better. It's really all about the buggy tours and sandboarding. If you go up the dunes and think there's a nice dessert then you are wrong. There just like 50-60 buggys driving around almost killing the people walking around.(picture) It's not a quiet and relaxed place - not at all. If you want to do a buggy tour, or sandboarding then do it somewhere else it's definitely not worth getting of the Bus here. It's just a waste of money. I definitely regret coming here even if it was just for one full day. It's so sad that I would like to give 0 of 5 points. :(

Thought this would be a good last stop after 6 months of wandering South America.. big mistake.. I guess if your looking for touristy it’s fine but generally overpriced, poor food in most locations and the little lake or pond... might be better described as a cesspool.. enter at your own risk

We visited here as part of our trip on Peru Hop. Included was a sandboarding and buggy tour of the dunes, using Arenas Tour Operator. We had the best time! Our driver, Arturo, was excellent. I felt safe the whole time, and was hesitant to try the sand boarding. Arturo gave us detailed instructions and ensured our safety from the top of the dune to the bottom when we sand boarded. I'm so glad I tried it! The sunset over the dunes at the end of our tour was a highlight. Don't miss this!

The Huachachina part of the tour was great but they added an extra 6 hours by going to Paracas, which made for a gruelling 18 hour day . 9 hours on a bus. Also you are put into a situation you have to pay for your lunch at an expensive place they choose. They need to split this tour in half into two activities so it’s not so long .

We stopped here on a day trip from Lima, and unfortunately we only had a short time to visit, but it was absolutely worth it.

I mean, IT'S AN OASIS.

I've never seen anything like this in person, and it's exactly what you'd see in a movie. There's a lagoon surrounded by trees, park, promenades, and shops. And the oasis is surrounded by sand dunes, which you can climb to get an overall view and terrific photos.

Besides shopping, eating, drinking, and lounging, there are paddle boats on the lagoon and plenty of dune buggy and sand boarding outfitters. I expect it would be a nice place to spend a day or two. But just for the novelty of it, don't pass by without at least a short visit.

Kinda overrated in my opinion. The water is brown and not swimmable. Paddle boats are available but why? The water is about 60 meters across. Bars and restaurants scattered around the perimeter. Lots of souvenir shops. It’s just a place to hang out and wait till you go in your dune buggy sand boarding excursion. I am relieved we did not make reservations here to stay the night.

This place is the main attraction if in Ica and is a definite must-see. The desert oasis of Huacachina offers a large lake in the middle of the desert. Once scaling the dunes you will see the vast desert expanse which goes as far as the eye can see. There is so much to do here including dune buggying, sandboarding and taking a boat out on the lake! It is an incredibly stunning part of Peru that I would recommend to anyone.

We stopped here so some people could go for a dune buggy ride. The rest of us walked around town which takes 30 minutes, had a cold beer and found a place where there was free wifi. It was very hot but a light breeze coming off the small lake was nice.
My friend paid 30 soles to have a swim in a hotel pool and said it was perfect.
The place doesn't have much to offer. It's really just a springboard to and from other places and for dune buggys.
Did see some people up on the top of the dunes using their snowboards (or similar) which was one hell of a walk.
There are toilets here and the place is generally wheelchair friendly.
Watch out for the buddy's as the zoom through town - can be a little reckless.

I've actually visited the Huacachina three times since 1990, the last time being April 2015. The first visit was great, the second two well not so much.

Other comments saying that it's dirty and it's loud are correct. What could be an oasis of serenity and relaxation is more like the cantina scene in Star Wars...I'm not even kidding. The Huacachina is full of vagrants, many not even Peruvian, who have moved in to sell drugs, prositutes, and cheap jewelry and those are the ones that are actually working and not panhandling. On one visit I saw one bathing in the lagoon and the last visit we were harassed continually during an awful dinner experience.

Until the city of Ica wakes up and cleans up what was once a beautiful oasis and a place for family to visit, I'd skip the Huacachina and pick a Nazca Lines flight that will fly over the Huacachina for viewing and photos.

The Huacachina could be so much more than the dump that it has become.

The oasis is set in a very beautiful desert, the lagoon is I feel a bit over stressed by the ever growing touristic infrastructure and party hostel. With the city of ica neighboring the oasis and the desert, it is really sad seeing how much trash and plastic became an integrated element of this beautiful landscape. Every tourist should pick up 10 pieces of trash while going out in a buggy/sand boarding tour...helping out the lack of recycling.
