This is an extremely interesting and worthwhile spot to check out while on your way to or back from Machu Picchu. It’s a short walk from town, on the way to Machu Picchu. Part science, mostly ecology, you get to spend a lot of time with a lot of butterflies. Highly recommended.

This was an amazing place, and they are doing an amazing job in this butterfly sanctuary, creating a perfect environment to help save endangered species of butterflies. We saw the whole life span of the butterflies and I was able to release a butterfly, newly out of its chrysalis.
This is well worth a visit,

Very interesting spot hidden 15 min’s walk from Aguas Calientes. The guy there explained the processes by which butterflies emerge and showed us different samples of eggs and cocoons under a microscope. Nice sanctuary garden at the end!

15 minutes leisurely walk from Aguascalientes. Very educational. Great for kids. Highly recommend. It's good to help the people of Machu Picchu pueblo/Aguascalientes.

We had an incredible experience with Leonardo, his explanations were very clear and we enjoyed observing and understanding the different species. Definitely recommend to stop there on the way up/down to Machu Picchu. The center is ideally located and we were able to walk near the river too.

The perfect stop in aguas calientes when visiting machu picchu. Went on the way back from macchu pichu after walking down the mountain. Cesar gave us a tour and he was so knowledgeable and had great energy. Learned about different butterflies and got to set one free!

It is clear that the staff have a deep understanding of the impact people are having on the area and need support to continue their investigative efforts.

The butterflies of Machu Picchu is a great effort to conserve the local species of butterflies. It only costs 20 Soles to enter fully worth to preserve some fascinating insects.

This is the second time I’ve been here and both were awesome. Came here in 2019 and it was a tiny little place with people that are passionate about butterfly conservation. Returned in 2022 to find that they have expanded and upgraded the access points.
The man who seems to run this place was the same both times I was there and he is very knowledgeable and is doing all he can to research and protect these butterflies. They have a small cafe and have added a spot to watch birds that eat fruit.
I suggested a stop here to my guide and trekking partner on our way from the hydroelectrico to aguas calientes. My partners were not disappointed and the tour guide plans to bring more trekkers here along this hike.
The work they are doing is very important but most people pass by only on their way to Machu Picchu. He is working to add an additional site on the Inca trail. Please go and support this place. I know you will see how passionate they are about conservation. It is a small walk (10 mins) from AC but if you are in this town it means you are more than willing to take a stroll. You won’t be disappointed.

I am staying at the hotel Natura Sol in the next few weeks. What is the best and safest way for me to get to this place from my hotel?

The only way is to walk down the main road past the bus depot and keep going. It is down the road about 35 minutes on your left. Hard to miss! It is pretty safe as everyone else going there or to el jardín de mandor also walk along that road. Be sure to watch out for busses though!
