Unfortunately, many of the reviews are for Machu Picchu, not the town below through which everyone passes. The town exists because the rail line ends there and thousands of tourists need to get on the buses to Machu Picchu. The town is divided into the local and tourist areas. The tourist area is VERY expensive. Hotel prices are OK but... More

One word on how I felt: Renewed. Words cannot explain how amazing Machu Picchu is! I felt so small in such a big world and felt I had more to give than I ever thought before when I was there and still do. This experience changed me. If you can go, do.

Machu Picchu is beyond any expectations I ever had. The winding road up from Aguas Callientes town is a bit hair raising in places, especially on the way down, as it is not paved. Much of Machu Picchu, we were told, is socked in much of the year, and rightfully so, as it is situated in the rainforest. However, if... More

A quaint little town with the railroad running through the middle. It is understandably very touristy but the staff wherever we went were polite and helpful.

I have been here twice, the first time in 2002. I am 69, my friend 72. We managed to trek to the Sun Gate, about two miles from the entrance. It was arduous. But, many people encouraged us along the way. I travel a lot and this is the most magnificent place on the planet.

A great place to stay to take a break before or after seeing Machu Picchu. Be sure to talk the bus up and back. It's straight up and the people we saw walking in April looked exhausted. The roadways are narrow and can be very dusty. And you'd have to pack a lot of water. Use a guide to glean... More

This village at the base of Machu Picchu offers respite for the weary. Yes, its touristic, but that is how Peru earns hard currency. Don't be dismayed. Enjoy the sweet hotels/hostels, get a massage, eat a meal, buy a trinket and walk around this tiny village in a narrow gorge. There are some lovely statues, and in the center of... More
