I stumbled into Henrimoweta on my quest to find Nigerian fridge magnets. You see I try to collect the magnets of every country and city that I visit, even though I'm from Nigeria. This simple item proves a bit difficult to find around these parts; and being that Lagos State is one of the most preferred tourist hotspots in the country, it seems the best possible place for me to find what I'm looking for. I already have one with the Nigerian flag, so I was looking to add to my collection, and perhaps find one that says 'Lagos State'. I was in the Victoria Island area, so a simple internet search of prominent Arts & Crafts shops in the vicinity brought me to Henrimoweta. Conveniently located on the famous Adetokumbo Ademola Street, just on the curb of the main road that leads to the once-upon-a-time notable 'landmark'- Bar Beach, it was very easy to get to. The shop was quite adorable; small and quaint. There were lovely African Wood Sculptures on the wall outside and the shop's title was done in a gorgeous, stylized Wood Carving. Upon arriving and interacting with the staff, I discovered to my sheer surprise that the shop was named after the actual artist! His name was HENRI MOWETA, and his impressive artwork adorned most of the walls of the shop. I met GIDEON and BIMBO in the store, and they were rather polite and pleasant. GIDEON was exceptional; very helpful, jovial and professional. He told me that the Henrimoweta 'brand' had been available for a long time, (for over 20 years), and that they had a shop in Antonia. This V.I branch had only been open for 4 years. There is a wide range of Art available at Henrimoweta. Everything from CONTEMPORARY PAINTINGS to FIBRE GLASS ART to OIL MURALS/PAINTINGS to MIXED MEDIA ARTWORK to WOOD CARVINGS to METAL SCULPTURES to REALISTIC ART to AFRO-CENTERED MURALS to TRADITIONAL TAPESTRY to ABSTRACT ART was available for sale. Prices were a bit on the 'steep' side, but this is quality, original art, sourced directly from the artists. Though I unfortunately didn't find my 'precious' fridge magnet(s), ☹ I did come across some interesting shelves that had stuff like CULTURAL DRUMS, FAUX IVORY HORNS, BEADED JEWELRY, RAFFIA BASKETS, LOCAL SOUVENIRS, TIE/DYE ITEMS, CARVED STONE MATERIALS, HAND-MADE ETHNIC DOLLS, COW HIDE/LEATHER PRODUCTS, NIGERIAN CRAFTS & MEMORABILIA, WOOD DECORATIONS, HAND-CRAFTED CARVINGS, LOCAL POTTERY, COPPER/METAL ORNAMENTS, BEADWORK, STUFFED ANIMAL TOYS, BENIN BRONZE MASKS and HAND-PAINTED SCULPTURES. Along with the rich collection of Artwork available at Henrimoweta, this place is a 'treasure trove' of amazing ethnic, traditional stuff that's a great 'pick up' for anyone; locals, visitors from out of state and tourists alike. Since they didn't have the fridge magnet I came looking for, I got a small wooden decorative plaque carved in the shape of Nigeria, and done in the colours of the Nigerian flag, (refer to picture posted). It said 'Greetings from Nigeria, The Giant of Africa'! I also got a cute key holder; Nigerian themed as well. I walked out of Henrimoweta feeling like 'Nigeria's most "loyal" Patriot! πŸ˜‚πŸ™…πŸΎβ€β™€οΈ I really enjoyed visiting 'Henri Moweta's' African Art Center, and I can definitely see myself coming here again. Gideon explained to me that you can commission any artwork, painting or sculpture to be made exclusively for you if you contact Mr. Moweta directly. This sounds really neat. He also buys from lots of local Artists all over Nigeria. I should mention that there are plenty of other Artist's work available at Henrimoweta, not just his. I hope I get an opportunity to one day meet him, so that I can directly praise him for putting together a wonderful collection of some of the best African 'Artistic Masterpieces' I've ever seen under one roof! πŸ‘πŸ½ I want to once again say a big thank you to GIDEON and BIMBO for being so sweet and courteous. GIDEON is a fantastic employee, who should be commended for being so current and knowledgeable about Henrimoweta Center's impressive artwork. An Arts Center definitely well worth visiting whenever y'all come to Lagos, so this is a place I highly, highly recommended! πŸ‘πŸ½πŸ‘πŸ½πŸ‘πŸ½πŸ‘πŸ½
