My husband and I hiked to the top of Maderas during our stay on Ometepe. We left from our B&B at 7:30 and headed up, up, up. We met several groups of people coming down the volcano who didn't want to continue to the top due to exhaustion, mud and danger. We determined to make it - five and one... More

Hiking up Volcan Maderas is not for the inexperienced! It's an 18 km hike with an elevation gain of appox 1200 m +. You must be physically fit, and have a REALLY good pair of hiking shoes/boots (running shoes won't cut it). Hiking experience is a definite plus. Note that there are 3 trails up. The one that is closest... More

Hiked on Christmas with my wife and teenage son. We are all fit. The hike took 9 hours, and left us pretty drained. The majority of our hike (and this is usual) was shrouded in cloud/mist and was extremely muddy. Because the hike is steep and there are places with no obvious branches to hold, it gets very slippery--especially on... More

Experience the cloud forest ... not the rain forest. You'll see a variety of monkeys and lots of other wildlife (e.g., butterflies and birds and snakes)

If you want to overcome the challenge of saying you hiked one of the volcans on Isla de Ometepe, this one is apparently easier. However, know that most of the time, you'll be in the forest with no views of the island. The only view you have from up high is after an hour from the start and you can... More

We hiked Maderas in November 2015. The entire hike was very wet, not just the cloud forest part. The ankle deep mud didn't start until the cloud forest section, though. The hike took us ~8 hrs roundtrip. Our guide was Ephraim - we would recommend him, very energetic, funny, good guy. Comments: 1) The hike was challenging but very rewarding... More

I agree, with the comment below, it's a personal challenge but I would never do it again. I'm new to hiking, so I chose to hike the Maderas Volcano over the Concepción on Ometepe, because it was smaller and I thought it was probably easier. Boy was I ever wrong. I've heard the terrain on Concepcion is much easier and... More

We could look right into the crater of the volcano. It was so beautifull!! Also the walk around the other, inactive, volcano crater was really perfect. We went there by public bus, but then had to walk up to the museum from where you can be transported to the top. The walk was long and hot. So maybe try to... More

Challenging 8 hour round trip hike (4 hours up and down the same path) with the majority of it scrambling steep inclines in slippery, ankle sprain inducing mud. Do not recommend if you do not have endurance/are not in shape. The crater lake view is dismal; the best view is an hour into the hike. We had a super clear... More

I'm not really a hiker. A runner yes. It's important to have good cardio and a solid pair of legs on. Like everyone else says, the right shoes are also imperative. The hike is quite hard but not so much because of the incline, but because of how slippery and treacherous it is. Coming down is tough and gave me... More
