I did a kayak trip with Playa Peru and they were great! They had both single and double kayaks. They brought us out in a panga to the mouth of the river to make it easier.
The cost was $25.
The tour itself was great: lots of birds, a big caiman and great views.
Definitely worth it!

We did a kayak tour with Caballito's Mar Kayak Tour and had the best afternoon! So many bird sightings as well as Howler Monkeys, Caimans and a very knowledgeable guide! It was perfect!

With did a 3 hour morning kayak trip with guide Alan from Playa Mangoes. We took it nice and slow to spend time watching and photographing the wildlife; monkeys, caymens and lots of birds. Our guide was really knowledgeable and a great spotter. The gear was good from Playa Mangoes and it was the perfect spot to start and finish, with good food, friendly staff, clean bathroom and safe parking. It also has a lovely beach with deck chairs and swing over the water so perfect for hanging out before or after your tour. This kayak trip was one of our favourite things so far of a packed two weeks to date in Nicaragua.

There are lots of places to rent kayaks close to Rio Istien. The lake can get rough if there is a strong wind. The river is short but there are a lot of birds and the occasional caiman and turtle. There are also monkeys in the trees. If you go with a guide, you will probably see more and learn more but it's fun to go by yourself and just explore also.

A total wow moment for a hardened and cynical traveller :-) I have never anywhere seen so many birds in such a small area. Don't miss it! I would recommend taking a kayak trip from El Peru, near Merida. Ask for Noel - he is a great guide, knows a lot but also knows when to be quiet. Was also great when I capsized my kayak and fell in Lake Nicaragua - make sure your camera and phone are in sealable bags!

We took a kayak tour of the river and I'm so glad we did. 7 of us (3 adults, 4 teens) opted to get towed to the mouth of the river and then go from there. It was a really windy day so I'm so glad we opted to get the tow to the mouth of the river as it would have been hard in the wind! Two of the adults used inflatable stand up paddle boards (that we brought to the island) and the rest of us were in double kayaks. Both were fun ways to go up the river. Our guide pointed out many birds and monkeys and shared interesting facts about the river. We could only go so far, as the water plants took over after a while, but what we did see was amazing.

A man from El Peru Kayaking ‘pretended’ to help us when my friend fell of her scooter on the way there... he said he would fix the scooter and buy new parts while we were kayaking. Kayaking was okay, guide wasn’t very informative and only saw birds. When we got back the guy had done such a bad job ‘fixing’ the bike my friend had to pay an extra $100 usd at the rental shop... he had sticky taped back on a mirror when he said he would buy new ones... plus we had already paid him for the repairs... scamming injured and vulnerable tourists....really low.
