Do not come to the Kintamani region!! Rather than collect yet another tourist fee, the Bali Government should pay tourist to come here to spend their tourist dollars. Due to horrible agricultural practices of using raw livestock wastes as fertilizer (instead of composting as any gardener knows), the flies are of biblical plague proportions. Thousands will swarm over your body, fly in your face whist driving, and make safe eating impossible because they cannot be kept off the food. This is the typical Bali experience of charging 5 stars fees and delivering a one star service. I was charged fees to enter the hot springs but the toilets reeked! The changing rooms were a cesspit and the hot springs themselves swarmed with flies. It is obvious that none of the fees were used for maintenance or repairs. You cannot hike the mountain without hiring a guide from the local mafia. To attempt to hike without a guide results in physical violence (pushing, hitting, rock throwing) to prevent you from gaining access to the trail. The Bali Government knows of this but by their reluctance to stop it, they obviously approve of yet another tourist fee. I paid IDR 100,000 for two tickets to a water fall. It was horribly dangerous as there was thick moss and mold covering nearly every step of the path. The whole journey was treacherous, handrails were rusted and broken, we had numerous slips but fortunately no falls. No one over the age of 60 should attempt this. And the waterfall, boring! I have seen many waterfalls far better than this and they were free. Plus I did not risk injury. Just sweeping with a stiff, coarse broom would make the path 10 times safer.

The view was absolutely stunning--from this location, you can see the huge, dormant volcano, complete with the blackened surroundings, and other mountains in the region. The entire thing is crested by Bali's common enormous clouds, and the lake is beautiful. We didn't trek up the mountain, and only took a few photos here, but it was definitely worth it.

Many years ago,I came here and it was a dirt track and a few hawkers. Now it has a massive viewing platform along with aggressive hawkers. Now don't get me wrong, the views are fabulous and many lovely restaurants around too....BUT..if ur a foreigner and have a car or guide, before u getting the top to view the mountain u will be charged 50,000rp or $5 per person just to drive to the top 1 min away. I have no objection to pay as long as at the other end there is someone to maybe give a brief history of the area or mnt. All monies go back to the government but nothing for the locals who are struggling!( that's what I was told by the guide).
So,as explained to the guide what I would spent with the hawkers, was spent at the ridiculous "entrance" fee.
Do yourself a favour...buy a postcard instead!

Filthy litter strewn town whose only redeeming feature is that it has a Starbucks. Visit if you must, I don’t recommend it

Lovely sightseeing. The drive to the mountain was very pleasant. We had a nice coffee watching the view of the lake. A little bit chilly for Bali. Worth buying tangerine from the locals.

It‘s another vacation experience compared with other sights in Bali. A worthy place to visit for those who have not been to volcanoes.
