Although there might be great history here, there's not much to see and wouldn't bother unless all the other major sights have been enjoyed.

It was a short but sweet visit. I think the reason why our family had a great time visiting the site is that we did it through a packaged tour of Nin Binh, and so we had a guided tour of the place (kudos to our great guide Hoa!). The place has such a fascinating story and though it doesn't loo grand, its ancient vibes made up for it. The gardens are well kept and there's a pond with fishes. It would be a nice place to roam around.

The ancient city is spread over a large area. We crossed the bridge and walk through the main entrance of the walled city. The main highlights that remained in the city were the temples and gardens. They were well maintained. There were many historical events relating to this city, so it is recommended to read up about this place for a better understanding before the visit.

Road to & past this so called historic place and then kept on going ! Not worth going into the bull #&-! that goes on outside the entrance which is enough to put off any sane tourist. With a location with apparent historical importance you would think again the authorities would crack down on it, if they want tourists to enjoy the visit. And I stood around for a further 10 mins just to watch further shenanigans unfold.

The site itself is not large and does not take much time to go around. It was very pretty and interesting, even if there were not many English explanations. (e.g. I still have no idea what a "dragon's bed" is, despite attempting to google it).
It was a rather chaotic experience, however. Once we entered, the people at the clothing stand were loudly shouting at, and literally chasing, all the people wearing shorts, trying to get them to cover up. There were unfortunately so many people wearing shorts that this meant continuous shouting. There were people on motorcycles saying we needed to hire one/take a ride with them to get around the site (definitely not; it was small). It was unclear where the site began and ended. Finally, we walked up a long flight of steep steps to the left of the entrance to see the emperors tomb and were scammed into buying incense at 10,000 dong each by a lady who lit it in front of us despite us saying "no".

While the history and beauty are enjoyable, I'm afraid there were too many negatives for us. Thousands of people. Difficulty getting through very large tour groups who hold everybody else up in order to take their group photos. Paid an entry fee per person but then were demanded additional fee each time we needed to use the toilet once we were inside. Be warned to cover your shoulders and knees to enter (they have clothing wraps to borrow if you don't come prepared). No English explanation boards to explain what we were looking at. People jump in front of our motorbike in order to stop us and told us free bike parking. Then on return to the bike, told us we had to eat there because we parked there.

Totally worth skipping. Don't waste your time on this one. Has mostly different old pagodas...saw better ones across Vietnam. Lots of better places to visit in Vietnam and around ninh binh.
Also beware of the bike taxis outside. Had a bad experience where 2 of them agreed to take my husband and me on a quick tour of the ancient capital with stops across all key landmarks inside for 70k VND but once we completed the trip they asked for more and created a nuisance.

Nothing to see here. The descriptions are bad or non existent and the buildings are not well taken care of. Just don´t spend your time here.

The Hoa Lu Ancient Capital was part of the group itinerary that I was on, so normally I would not have made a visit here. Although we only stayed an hour, so it wasn’t too bad to gain a history lesson about the Ancient Capital of Hoa Lu.
