    Bukharan History
My partner and I were pleasantly surprised that our visit to the Ark was much more interesting than we initially thought. The dioramas of the Ark as a fortress after the entrance/ticket window weren't particularly great, but the exhibits inside gave a nice history of Bukhara. The restored mosque was a highlight, as was one of the restored courtyards. If you're lucky (and pay a little extra), you might get a guide to let you see the unrestored sections (and Bolshevik damage) of the Ark in addition to a panoramic view of the Old City.

Has to be included in any visit to Bukhara
Well preserved with more being opened up as exploration/ excavations continue. Old mosque & coronation room were highlights. Museum was informative . The views over the city and country side from the battlements were worth the entry fee on their own .Easy to imagine it as self contained citadel with stabling , market , administration buildings as well as the usual “ royal” buildings .

    Another Iconic Structure
The massive Ark structure is yet another iconic structure of Bukhara. Fascinating to look at and a great point of reference in relation to other sites in this beautiful ancient city. Didn’t bother going inside because through the entrance, it looked like a lot of renovations were being carried out.

Finally we got to the highlight, for me at least! The Ark of Bukhara, fortress of the Emirs for around 1500 years, although during that time it was damaged and rebuilt many times. The final conquest by the Russians in the 1920s resulted in the almost total destruction of the fortress and very little original work is left today. The restoration has focused on a couple of internal rooms and the walls either side of the entrance ramp - if you go further round the walls are reduced to just a pile of mud. This doesn't in anyway distract from the awesomeness of the building and how impressive it must have looked in its heyday.
We went inside the fortress and there are a few small museums, some with lovely 19th and early 20th century photos of the old city and some of the Emirs, the last one dying in Afghanistan in 1947 after the Russians took over Bukhara in 1920. There was also the coronation room, where the Emir would meet foreign dignitaries although this was completely destroyed so it has now been partially restored. It does give an idea of the splendour and wealth of the Emirs, if you use some imagination.
There is also a walk into the archeological area, basically all the internal areas they haven't restored and a walk along the restored section of the walls. There is one small badly damaged mosque to see and that's about it, the rest is rubble. The views from the walls are good but it's best to go mid afternoon as otherwise you'll be photographing straight in to the sun. I probably spent as long outside the ark, walking up and down the router of the ramparts, as I did inside and an hour is more than enough.

Grandeur -Ancient,Old and New, all put together at one place. History relived. Uzbekistan although full of colours in most of monuments, even earthy look brings elation to the heart and mind.

Easy to skip. The outside is marvelous, but inside there is not much to see. Entry for foreigners is 40.000 and this doesn't include the Zonda/dungeon which is somewhere else and another 20.000. Inside there is a museum with some old stuff and pictures and even a small natural history exhibit (go figure). Lots of renovations and people trying to sell you the same stuff as usual. This is not worth the money.

I walked round this huge 4th-century fortress with its impressive intact/restored walls, but didn't have a look inside, there was too much else to see in Bukhara!

Historians estimate that this citadel has been here since 4 century BC. The complex is like an enclosed city with lodgings, stables, stores, mosques, and madras

Located in the ancient city of Bukhara, this massive fortress dates back to the 5th century. See the view of the Ark from the Observation Deck If you want to get a better view of the Ark, this observation deck is located just across the street. One has to pay a fee to go on the top floor, but view is good.

The Ark has a few buildings, much area still remains to be excavated. There was a nice museum inside, which was informative. A nicely decorated little mosque. Wall of the Ark is the most impressive structure, walk around it.

The Ark is Bukhara is a must see, whether you go in or just admire the massive imposing walls from without.
For me, it would be a pity not to go in. It has a nice Mosque and a number of inner courtyards. There's a small museum too and the entrance fee is very small.
If it's evening when you visit and it's closed, honestly, it's still worth walking out to to see its walls and the huge expansive plaza our front
It's just across from the Friday Mosque and there's a cool prison museum, the Zindan, the other side of it.
