Judging from its exterior, this temple is neither the grandest nor the most atmospheric in Ayutthaya so an average camera-wielding tourist won't find it that exciting. But it is the sole survivor of the Second Fall of Ayutthaya (1765-1767) when the city that once rivalled European capitals was completely burnt down. Because the Burmese camped here, this historically significant wat retains its glory, most notably its Ayutthaya-style (solemn) Buddha image in the ubosot. To the east lies a small vihara with a black-stone seated Buddha dating from the Dvaravati era (6th to the 13th centuries) which historians say has been moved here from Nakhon Pathom. Needless to say, anyone with the slightest interest in Thai history should visit this functional temple.

This temple is in a good condition and had a beautiful Buddha statue in royal garb. Please follow modest dress code.

The only temple in the city that wasn't destroyed by the war. It is constructed in the late-Ayutthaya-period architecture style. Make sure you visit a small vihara (next to ubosot) which is home to a huge 14th century standing stone Buddha image.

Across the small bridge from Ayutthaya's island, this huge temple has two buildings.
Especially nice is the smaller size building with a very unusual and unique buddha statue.

The grounds around this temple are beautiful. There’s a big pond with fish and tortoises in it.
The inside of the temple is amazing. There’s a huge golden Buddha surrounded by very nice decorations.
There’s a few miniature temples around the outside of the big one as well.
Glad I saw this.

Taken to this in continuation of our group tour. It survived the carnage by serendipity. Exquisitely maintained, like all active temples in Thailand, it contrasts strongly with the ruined structures in the rest of historical Ayutthaya. Our guide again knew the best place to take a photo inside, with the sun coming onto us from a skylight and the famous golden Buddha looking down on us, reflecting gold, black and red. She also pointed out the series of votive Buddha statues in various postures from Monday through to Sunday and one for no day at all (for those who don't know their birthday!). Took some photos with my day. Subsequently noticed them in every other vat we visited. There's a small shrine outside with the original stone Buddha. A different Ayutthaya.

The lore says the principal Buddha image of this temple "cried" when Ayutthaya was sacked by the Burmese in ancient history, so local people are strongly attached to it. The temple building is a beautiful example of architectural inspired by the lines of a boat. The main point of interest is actually the stone Buddha image in the smaller shrine on the side. It is very unusual because the Lord Buddha is depicted sitting with feet on the floor, rather than in the "lotus position." The temple grounds are also peaceful and beautiful.

Wat Naphrameru is a temple situated near the banks of the city canal system and the Lopburi River. Constructed by King Ramadhibodi the second the 10th king in the Ayutthaya dynesty. The Wat was used to sign a peace agreement between the King of Burma, known as King Tabengchaveti, and the King of Siam, King Phramahchraphat the 15th King of Ayutthha. Within this wat is a very rare image of Buddha dresses as a prince before his enlightenment. The image is said to be 6 meters high and over 4 meters wide.

Wat Naphrameru is not much to look at on the outside but it contains an extraordinarily beautiful Buddha image, well worth a visit if you're in Ayutthaya.
