This exhibition is perfect if you have little time and need to have a some understanding of the sheer size of ancient Ayutthaya and its history. It has small reproductions of the most important parts. Visiting the Historical park without having any prior information can be overwhelming. We thoroughly enjoy our stay in Ayutthaya and surely the vist to the Historical Study Centre helped. It just needs some maintenance as some interactive parts of the exhibition don't work.

The Ayutthaya Historical Study Center (AHSC) was funded by the Japanese Government and is a national research institute devoted to the study of Ayutthaya's history when Ayutthaya was the capital of Siam from 1351 till 1767.
The AHSC was constructed in the second part of the eighties in a modern architectural style, all but reflecting much of Thailand's architecture; a design which evoked a bit of discussion at that time. The center features an exhibition on Ayutthaya's past displaying a number of themes such as Ayutthaya as a capital, as a port city and a central state.
The hall is impressive and the exposition, especially the model of the Grand Palace is worthwhile to see. I got anyhow the impression that - and the building and the exhibition - start to show signs of decay. The right wing which exhibits Ayutthaya as a trading port had many of its displays not functioning, which made it very hard to read the explanatory texts. Some monitor screens were not working and there was no surveillance present during my visit. Even not a simple handout was given together with the entry ticket.
The brochure of the Tourist Authority of Thailand (TAT) states that the study center supports an information service and a library containing historical material about Ayutthaya. This paragraph in the brochure must be obsolete. To my regret the only information I received was "no library", let alone a single book.
Do not get me wrong: the center is worthwhile a visit and is very informative especially on trade, but only if you have really time to kill. In my opinion the TAT exhibition at the Ayutthaya Tourism Center (ATC), the Chao Sam Phraya Museum and the Chantra Kasem Museum enjoy a higher priority. I do not want to be harsh, but now close to its 25th anniversary, a bit of overhaul would do it no harm. I would say a study center without a library and reading room, is as a pub with no beer ...

Most of the interactive stuff doesn't work. Some of the ancient models are quiet interesting. Some displays are informative but overall it's not a must-do and nothing compared to the real sites.

Not very academic but the models and display give you a great background into what life was like and how the city looked at its peak. Interesting info on trade in Asia at that time

A well laid out place to visit taking you on a journey through Ayutthaya's past and it's people and food and boat's. A 2 hour visit should be enough time for filling in those gaps in history and what and why Ayutthaya is and was important.

Loved the displays, but marred by the hard to read descriptions. Went here AFTER visiting several ruins which is how I would recommend doing it as it put so much into perspective. I agree with what almost everyone has previously written, but still glad I went as there are some excellent things to look at.

Expensive compared to actual temples (100 baht foreigner's price). Poor labeling (White text on light/white backgrounds) and very little actual information on the Kingdoms that made Ayutthaya their capital. Some of the information on trading and village life was nice, but I get the feeling (based on reviews) that our money would have been better spent going to the nearby Chao Sam Phraya Museum.

There are captions in every exhibits but lack of valuable informations. There is no staff or a guide to give any information about the pieces being displayed.
The pieces though let you imagine it could be this or that happened years ago.
The audio visual room is more interesting because they used a round or revolving projector with the story how the Siam kingdom evolves. Relaxing inside coz it has a good a/c.

Cons: the lady in the ticket office doesn't speak English.
The museum has info in English.
It's very small and not very interesting. I only recommend it if you have some time free. Otherwise skip it.

The displays and models can give you a better picture of what Ayuthaya was like in the past. It is a shame the multimedia (sound recordings, lighting up spots on maps) has not been repaired as of this writing. If you're on a strict budget, you may skip it because of the ticket price, but if you want some time indoors to escape from the sun or rain, it might be worthwhile. It doesn't take long to see all the exhibits.
