Completed in 1953 the over 80m high dam serves to provide (mainly) Kerala of hydro-electric power. The blocking of the Muthirappuzha river meant a huge artificial lake emerged. The dam area is exploited as a tourist attraction where boating is available. There are also some stalls where locals sell tea, coffee, snacks and other stuff. Parking space is limited.
The dam is 11 km northeast from Munnar town. I walked there through the foothills (Munnar - New Colony - Periyavarai - Reserve Forest - Carmelgiri - Top Station highway). The hike was better than the dam.

Too busy on the weekend. Lot of merchants and hard to find parking. We asked a local taxi driver about family boating arrangements near and they directed us to another place by continuing on the same hwy (on the other side of the lake) by KTDC. That place was a lot peaceful and enjoyable for family visit/boating/park and other kids activities.
Though I'd you want to shop/buy cute/touristy stuff and haggle with merchants, you have to stop near the dam. It's certainly a good experience.

We visited in dec 2022 and the experience was ok. The whole experience was ruined by the amount of waiting - we waited for over 1 hour for the speed boat. Also, did not like that you purchase a ticket on parking counter only to find out that boating ticket is separate (designed that way to cheat the consumer thinking that boating charges is Rs. 40). We were not told of the waiting time at parking counter so we were stuck there and had to wait over 1 hour for speed boat. However, speed boat ride was worth it and we all liked. Tip: Avoid going to restaurant at lunch hours as it is highly crowded. Try to go before 1 pm or post 3 pm.

Mattupetty Dam (Madupetty Dam), near Munnar in Idukki District is situated on the "Munnar-Topstation" mountain highway route. It , is a storage concrete gravity dam built in the mountains to conserve water for hydroelectricity and It has been a vital source of power yielding along with other such dams. The large amount of perennially available water in the large lake formed by the dam allows wild animals and birds to flourish. Boating activities for tourists are available on this lake reservoir.

We had a day of driving around the area and visited this dam to see if boating was available. It was a weekend and so there were many people out and it was too busy to stay around. Monkeys were happy with people offering corn. Lots of stalls and lots of boating opportunities - not easy access to water and not all types of boats available. Views and photo ops were great though.

average dam compared to international standards , water sports were a joke, however this may be something worth considering for local Indian tourists as they seemed to have a lot of fun visiting this site

The place is suitable for those who are interested in speed boating, else there is hardly anything this place offers. The bridge on the reservoir is narrow and one should be careful.

We reached this place by 10 am on weekday and there was very less crowd. Lake created by the dam gives beautiful view. Would rate this place as must visit in Munnar considering there aren't any other place worth visiting. You can enjoy boat/speed boat/jet ski ride. Parking might be a problem if you a re visiting via your own vehicle. Plan to reach early and try to visit on weekday.

You can spend maximum 45 minutes approx. There are track and petty footpath and small shops and at the end boating point. Padel boat is better option here as you can enjoy scenic location. This a good location for boating and beauty.
We are going to vaishno devi on 25 july. we decide to climb early in morning is it safe

what will be the best time of the day to visit the dam? Early morning (just before sunrise), Morning (after sunrise) or sunset time. keeping in mind that we are looking for pictures

After sunrise. Do keep in mind the tourist rush for the boat rides. You will need to reach early to get a ride at around 10am. After that the sun is too hot and the sky will not contrast with the hills for good photos.

Hi
There are 2 companies providing boating facility. On eis from Kerala Tourism and other is from Mattupetty DAM electricity board.
Charges are same for both and it is 500/- for 15 min.
Actually not exactly 15 min but the route is fixed by which they take you through in boat. Max allowaed person in a boat are 4-5. FOr more than that, either you have to take multiple boats or to hire a bigger boat which charge apprx 1100 and can accomodate upto 15 person (perhaps 15 as I dont remember exactly).
Regards
Mohit
