This fort could be a great place to visit if it had been properly maintained. The Buddhist caves are in my opinion the only part worth the visit.

Persons interested in history will like the place. The mosque is in very poor state and so are the step wells.the caves are in better shape.

The oldest part of Junagadh, and the center of any visit to the city, is the upper citadel, known as Uparkot. Over 2300 years old, with walls up to 20 m high in some places, Uparkot is what allowed Junagadh to withstand a 12-year siege at one point. It is good to see a fort in Gujarat where you won't find forts as compared to neighbour princely state Rajasthan. You need guide to know the history of this former princely state. Yes, of course, they do make story to make history interesting. But amazing old architecture with Buddhist Caves, Famous step well and deep well.

This fort is huge. You actually need a vehicle to go around the fort. The place where they stayed is different and the place where they stored their ammunition is different and the place where they stored their groceries is different. It was like a whole city in itself.

The ancient fort is apparently first built by Chandragupta in 300 BC and then have changed hands between the dynasties and nawabs who came later. It is a huge fort built in lap of mountain with natural boundaries as well as fort walls. While it has a lot of architectural marvels in rock cut caves, stepwells etc. the place is... More
