Despite the different shape of the staircase, this church evoked in me allusions to the Roman Trinita dei Monti, which stands above the famous Spanish Steps. The church in Panjim, by the way, was built only a century later than Trinita. This, of course, is not Rome, but the church is well located and illuminated. Not too good, really. The façade is painted white as a sign of the virginity of the Virgin Mary, which has a fundamental meaning for Catholic theology. The church houses the second largest (after Se Cathedral) bell in Goa and an altar dedicated, naturally, to the Virgin Mary. We did not see or hear any of this due to the late visit. It's a pity..

The Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church is located in Panjim and sits atop a small hill facing the busy main square below. Barring roadside no dedicated parking available. An attractive architecture with bright white colour exterior and colorful interior. One has to climb couples of stairs to enter the main hall of the church. The main altar is dedicated to Mother Mary.

The building is closed permanently from the front (apart from a couple of tiers of steps). There are steps up to the top of the building from the right hand side - but these gates were locked when we visited. So what could have been a memorable visit turned out to be a bit of a damp squib.

Firstly, the church was closed! Secondly, a volunteer was at the gate informing those of us wearing shorts we were forbidden to enter even the lower part of the property, which she seemed to be running like a military operation. My shorts were knee length but this was unacceptable, even female clothing was in question especially with knee length skirts. Trousers seemed to be the only acceptable option. I wonder how much God is interested in our clothing compared to the condition of our hearts? The priests there need to address their calling if clothes matter more than those possibly seeking spiritual help?

I just loved the architecture of this church. It is painted in white and the location of this church is just amazing. This was a very nice example of Portuguese Baroque style architecture.

There are stairsways to the main building and it all looks very beautiful. From the top, you get a nice full view of nearbuy area/market.

We could not visit inside the church as it was closed. You’ll find random shops nearby this place and a nice walking street in the front.

Please make sure that this church will be open when you want to go as it has limited opening hours - probably the first church that I've ever been to that will not allow visits at anytime of day. Not very caring and sharing.

So, still haven't been inside.

Excellent location in the heart of the city. Free to visit. Long steps lead up to the church from the street below. Functioning Roman Catholic church of heritage value built by the Portuguese. The church bell is from the infamous Portuguese Inquisition period and was brought from Old Goa to its present place. Very well lit at night and especially at festive times. Good view from the top. Inside the church is disappointing compared to outside. People sit on the steps in the evenings though Panjim city air can be polluted at times.

But disappointing once you get inside. The interior is not well maintained and the overly dutiful verger reprimands visitors.
