Širok sokak is a very old and popular street in Bitola. More than a century ago, it housed the embassies of some countries, and later also prestigious cafes and shops. Today, there are many shops, restaurants and buffets in this long street, so no visit to Bitola is complete without a walk along Širok sokak.

This pedestrianised street in central Bitola has everything you could want from delightful little shops and restuarants to larger department stores. If you wander off the main drag down the little side alleys you will stumble across oldBitola as it was under Ottoman rule.

There are thousands of pedestrianized shopping street in Europe. What makes this street ubique is the energy it expresses. There are cafes and restaurants, small boutiques without the hideous experience of Lux branding like Gucci, Versace, Louis Vuiton,Armani, YL. and the overpriced stores you can find anywhere in Europe.
But the real charm is the building energy you experience on the weekends as the day progresses. It's great for people watching. You see families and children strolling along ,and middle age folk greeting those they know. It's not particularly touristy but it is uniquely Biltolan!
Along its 3 km length there are restored early 20th C buildings that catch the eye and add to the uniqueness. At it's far end ,heading towards Hercaleum the street becomes a long park-like environment, with tally shady pines, families with young children, bike riders, and the occasional group of soccer boys. Also unique for MK the park is clean, unlittered, and well maintained. The city of Bitola has a LOT to be proud of, and their pride shows in the development and maintenance of the cities' public spaces.

The main pedestrian street, lined with cafes and restaurants. Stroll along, stop for a coffee, and watch the world go by.

I first visited this street in 2007 and found it rather run down. In 2021, I found it largely renovated, with ever increasing variety of shops and eateries. It is still improving and I am sure that it will be a great shopping street in a few years. Even now, the architecture is quite beautiful and the people make for a lively streeet scene.

Bitola's main pedestrian zone, usually know as Širok sokak, is probably one of the most beutiful walking areas in this part of the Balkans, in Macedonia for sure. It is known for architecturally and aesthetically beautiful buildings and numerous honorary consulates. It is a vibrant part of the city which combines both the traditional architecture with modern facilities. It is full of caffees, restaurants, but also museums and interesting oldfashioned workshops. All in all, take a slow walk and enjoy its beauty, you won't regret it. All recommendations!

We found it (positively) odd to feel such busy vibe on this street. Cafes were full from morning till night... Lots of cafes, restaurants as well as clothing, shoes and other. Nothing to write home about other than the surprise to find such vibe there...
